KS is already on the job to mark the important places on google earth including GMVN Wan.

By the way, we remembered you in Wan about your liking for typical local food. Debu tried his best to get the local saag (which you metioned in another thread) for us but was not available in Wan. I had tested that saag during my trek to Chhota Kailash in '93 and I liked it.

Almorabhoy & SK: Thats right ...I have tentatively place-marked all the places we camped and some other important trail-points on Google Earth. I was waiting to show those to SK on my PC and get his confirmation before putting out that KMZ file on my Blog.

Incidentally, Wan-GMVN is one location I could not mark with 100% certainity, as there are many houses in that wide-spread WAN-area and unable to identify the exact GMVN-shape, with the Temple & FRH behind it, on GE (even though the WAN area & the entire Roopkund trail is in Hi-Res Image; except Trishul Peak-1).

BTW: Almorabhoy: I did find all your old place-marks (very well-placed in fact ) on GE all the way to Roopkund! That helped me a lot to see the entire trek-trail even before we landed up there.

I will send you my KMZ file next week, after I return to Mumbai

SK, Your writing is excellent & am loving every part of it. One thing is for sure next time if someone is stranded in tent because of bad weather during roopkund trek he/she will be reading your roopkund posts.

Ronak.

Congratulations, Sadanand and KSB! Belated, no doubt --- I haven't checked in at IM for quite a while --- but no less sincere for that.

That's indeed a vivid description of the feeling of release brought about by a sudden respite from difficult weather. Sadanand, I am truly enjoying your account. I have started looking at the wonderful photographs too. Thank you both for sharing your experiences.

Excellent write up

I must compliment you for this wonderful write up, and also for the fact that you had the fortune of exploring the depths of the Himalayas. Wonderful sugestions and photos with very useful informations.
I would like to know whether it is worth trekking only to Ali and Bedini bugiyals(leaving Roopkund)from Gowaldam and back, and whether the guide you mentioned would guide me in thi trip.
Thanks ,
Sagarneel.

SK: Just got back home from Banaglore by Udyan-Exp. and read your Part-5 .... as usual, well written with factual details!

I just want to add a bit more about that Wan-lad (since I met him seperately a little ahead on the trail) who was on a Kidaa-Ghass hunting trip (Diwan Singh, if I remember his name right) impressed me a lot with his knowledge. I have never come across a person in a (remote) village, speak such perfect and chaste Hindi, with beautiful (and respectful) diction! I remember complimenting him for it and asking him how come he spoke so well?

He gave me a wry smile and explained about his stay and study in Chandigarh. And having to return back to his Wan village to look after his parents. He explained in a non-complaining and matter of fact manner his unfortunate suituation of "being the only son to his parents ... and his responsibility to look after them in their old age" and that "they would have been unhappy in (and adjusting to a big town like) Chandigarh" .... and so it was best for him to return to Wan ... though he was finding this rural life and Kidaa-ghaas hunting etc. a bit boring for himself!

I tell you, I was impressed by this boy!

My personal view is that in Roopkund trek route, the most beautiful part of the trek is Wan-Bedni Bugyal-Ali Bugyal-Pathar Nachauni. As per arjunm's account even Didana-Ali Bugyal route is equally good.

If you want adventure, you can continue the Pathar Nachauni-Kalu Vinayak-Baguabasa-Roopkund-Juiari Galli trek.

Debu will definitely be happy to guide you in this trek provided you tell him well in advance. I will give his details once he gets his mobile number.

Thanks for correcting me. I was handicapped by your absence from Mumbai and I was not able to get you on your mobile.
Yes, I remember now, he said he was the only son to his parents. But he never indicated to me that he was bored by rural life.
With your permission, I will amend the Report suitably.

Debu's BSNL Mobile number is: +91 94100-49694

Since his village (Khati on Pindari Route) does'nt have a cell-tower as yet, he may not answer, when at home. You can also contact him via Raju (Dahkuri Chai-walla) cell: +91 9410416855

KS and SK -

Wonderful trip and trip report. Enjoying it vicariously reading your account. My wife was so impressed with the pictures you and earlier trekkers included, she has now prioritized on our to-do list

As I read your troubles with the glacier crossings and deep soft snow, I am wondering if it was loosely packed dry snow or slushy mixture of water and snow. If it were the former, either having snowshoes or creating make shift ones might have helped a great deal.

I am not sure if he actually said he was "bored" with the rural life .... but he definitely sounded kind of "resigned" to his fate of a Wan-life!
