Weather in Costal AP in end of July / beggining of August

Hello,
me and 5 friends of mine are going first time to India 27.07.2007 - 15.08.2007. Planned to visit mostly Costal AP at that time. Starting from Vizag and moving slowly to South (Vizag, Kakinada, Machilipatnam, Kavali, Chennai?? ).
It the weather at that period in this region too rainy? And how is the sea at that time? Thanks.

Hi,
I haven't been to that area during that time of year but I have visited that area last december (Kakinada - Repalle), so let me give you some idea. Definitely, there will be rains in Andhra (Vizag to Nellore) as monsoon will be in full swing. Region around Chennai receives monsoon later in the year (Nov) so it may not see that much rains. This is like off-season to visit that area even for local tourism. It will not be hot temperature wise but humidity can make it uncomfortable. Sea is bound to be rough.

The region is not a tourism hot-spot so you may have difficulty fetching things which come by easily at other destination. Like easily available transport, english speaking people, decent restaurants and lodgings. If you are going to travel close to the coast, then road is the only option may be filled with a boat/ferry ride. All this might get affected due to rains. Trains are not known to cancel but they may get delayed.

Go through my trip report and photos from that trip of mine.

If you want any more info, do let me know.

Monsoon is not a good time to travel along the east coast.Heavy rain & storm might delay you. There are some beautful beach resorts near Vyzag.

i thing i have then misunderstood some articles. i remember reading from somewhere that in that time east cost would be more calm than the west cost. or are they both equally rainy and difficult to pass through?

Chennai and below areas in Tamilnadu receive rains during retreating monsoon so rains start late over there but Andhra coast definitely is at par with West coast as far as rains are concerned. That get compounded with lack of tourim infrastructure around places that u are going to visit.

Thanks everybody.
So if we are mostly interested of OK weather and spending good time it is wiser to go to Tamilnadu??
And how realistic it is that we could relax on the beach at that time?

I would suggest go to Vizag first which is a big city and has few good beaches and resorts. You would be able to predict weather once you are there and if things are fine then you could stay there for as long as weather permits and then push off to Chennai. There are trains / flights from Vizag to Chennai. Then you may go to Mamallapuram, Pondicherry and other towns along the coast.

So do i understand correctly, that even in Vizag it might be possible to spend time on the beach and swim during that period if we are lucky enough to have normal weather? Any suggestions are welcome.

During the monsoon the water at some beaches along the east coast becomes dangerous with strong under currents so consult local people before venturing out.
Check out Rishikunda beach near Vyzag

It should be possible. I believe even during monsoons you have certain spells when it does not rain or there is no strong wind. Swimming is different ballgame altogether. I am a non-swimmer and only waded through water whenever I am on a beach. I think even with a calm sea, risk of swimming varies depending on slope, sand and other idiosyncracies of sea. So, better try your luck at Vizag. As jyotirmoy has already mentioned Rushikonda beach resort is ideal for what you want. The resort is bang on the seashore with huge beach. If waether does not improve, you could move to other places in Andhra/Tamilnadu by consulting local people about weather. Vizag is second largest city in Andhra, so you will have transport to anywhere you want down coast.

Chennai's Marina Beach is not safe for swimming.

They keep a board up showing how many drowned ignoring the warning signs.

July could be a wet month in these parts....prone to cyclones, especially to the south of Machilipatnam.

Does the Krishna Delta normally get the worst of the weather?

I've read a fair bit about the floods along the Godavari, but nothing about the Krishna.

Thanks for the link, yet another story of the horror's faced by many people in parts of India, the names of these areas hardly appear on any map, and sadly, Eicher's India road atlas doesn't even include the land in their atlas.
