taxi from Tirupati to Mamallapuram?

I'm planning a trip that would have us arrive in Tirupati early morning (by train from Hampi). By the end of the day we'd like to be in Mamallapuram. Ideally we'd do the VIP darshan at Tirupati and then 'do' Kanchipuram on the way to Mamallapuram.

In the past we've gotten off the train at other places and negotiated with drivers right there. I was wondering if it would be a problem here for any reason (such as the fact that the taxi has to cross into TN). Also I don't know the language; I can do basic Hindi but don't know how effective that is in AP.

I know we can take the train to Chennai and then a taxi to Mamallapuram, but we'd rather go by the direct route if possible.

1. Please let me know if you've done something like this and how you went about it.

2. Would I have to pay for the taxi to return as well? What is the typical cost per km? (I realize it has probably gone up in recent months because of fuel prices.)

3. I can book a car in advance if that would be easier. Recommendations for agents in Tirupati with e-mail who could arrange this would be appreciated.

No, this was probably a too-specific or too-esoteric question for this board. But what the hell. It's India, everything can be arranged at some price.

I'll have some AC chair car reservations to Chennai as a backup plan; I'll throw those tickets away if I can hire a car.

Dear RPG,
I will suggest book a AC tickets on train from tirupati to chennai. I travelled on the train its very convenient. It 4-5 hours for chennai central. Take a taxi from chennai for mahabalupuram. We hired taxi for rs 6.5/km(But this was before the recent fuel hike) for mahabalipuram and pondicherry. Hindi is well understood in AP but not in TN. You can contact Satish at 9940202787. He is driver with the taxi company in Mylapore. He will give you the best deal in chennai.

Thanks for the information! Incidentally, the chair car trains from Tirupati to Chennai are scheduled for 3 hrs 15 min, not 4-5 hrs.

You are right as I was relying on my memory. There is one more train that leaves chennai at 13.50, Tirupati Express.
