Phanigiri-Tirumalagiri- Gajulabanda
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can give me some transport advice or even feedback on the places Phanigiri, Tirumalgiri and Gajulabanda in Nalgonda district. Important excavations have been taking place since 2000 (following preliminary excavations in the 1940s)at the large Buddhist monastery complex of Phanigiri (c. 3rd-2nd c BC earliest), which lies about 100 km from Hyderabad off the main road to Vijayawada, and about 45 km (?) from Suryapet. There are many early Buddhist sites closeby in the area with remains of brick stupas, chaityas and viharas, eg. Gajulabanda 4 km and Tirumalgiri about 6km. These are the transport options I've found so far: 1.Bus from Hyderabad to Suryapet.... but would still need taxi 2. Train from Hyderabad to Jangaon (nearest railhead) or Nalgonda ....but would still need taxi 3. Include Warrangal in taxi day trip, starting from Hyderabad and spending most of day at these Nalgonda sites and then catch train from Warangal to Kakinada No. 3 option appeals and would involve about 220 km driving (90 Km from Suryapet) for the day (+ 150 km for driver back to Hyderabad/ or overnight) But, that would also depend on road conditions en route to Warangal.... good/bad roads... heavy/light traffic If anyone's done the trip from Hyderabad to Phanigiri etc.. how was it? Is the bus or train transport option worth considering? ie. that might mean staying overnight in Suryapet or Nalgonda. Doable? Any feedback would be much appreciated. ![]() Last edited by alouise : Jul 25th, 2009 at 18:23. Reason: correction |
