I am planning a trip to India to join IIT-KGP next month.

Been following the Hyderabad airport delay as my parents live in Hyderabad. My Dad says, that the new airport authority are putting pressure on the government to close Begumpet so that airlines have to use the new one. The commute to and from the new airport is an absolute disaster - on roads that do not exist. Total mess.

My plan is therefore to forget about Hyd airport and fly into Kolkatta and then take train to KGP. After a week there, take the train again to Hyd, stay with parents and dearest Nattu for a week - take train again to Kolkatta and fly back. I know, I have left out some details, of joining and taking leave of absence - need to so that our home here sells - the real estate market in the US is in the pits.

Cheers anyhow

From the airport website, pretty vague blah blah..

Quote:
“ We are happy to state that the New Rajiv Gandhi International Airport ( RGIA ), Shamshabad was inaugurated by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, in presence of Chief Minister Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Minister of Civil Aviation Mr. Praful Patel, this evening.
The New Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is ready in all aspects.

We understand that some airlines have approached the Ministry of Civil Aviation seeking more time to begin operation from RGIA.

Acceding to their requests, MoCA has advised us to begin operations in a few days.

We will intimate the new date and will commence operations soon ”

Hyderabads' new airport is now up and running. All flights are coming and going from there now.

I was there this morning and it is definitely very nice, still some bits that make you think "Damn you India!" but mostly it is pretty good. Some interesting changes include that you dont have to pre-screen your check in baggage before you go to the check in counter, and that there are foreigners working in the coffee shops, which is weird.

As for getting to the airport, it took me 40 mins from Kondapur, but that was at 5am, so it is the bare minimum travel time. The roads from there are good, the approach to the airport is a good elevated highway, so I dont know why everyone is getting their panties bunched about the lack of infrastructure, there are only a few bits that would be a problem with traffic.

The pilot of a KLM flight from Amsterdam was not aware of the new airport so approached Begumpet then to Delhi, denied permission to land so finally touched down in Mumbai.

Yes, apparently KLM had not received the notice which India sent out regarding the airport.....which is strange considering that every other airline did.

I just heard this story from someone on the flight. However, they were told they couldn't land because of heavy rains; apparently they circled for a couple of hours. You'd think they would have been re-directed if need be, naa? Also, they were told that Delhi had some convention so they couldn't confirm hotel rooms for the crew & passengers, which is why they had to go to Mumbai.
Who knows?
So was this the first KLM flight into the new airport?

Yea that's true, except KLM everyone else knew that. The NOTAM had been issued 3 days earlier. Someone in Schiphol was sleeping big time. I arrived from DEL this morning. Had a very pleasant experience, was out of the airport within 7 mins of getting off the plane. Some work going on in the car park. Should be solved within the week.

All this talk of 2 hrs from the city is hogwash. For the last one month, I have been commuting regularly from the city (Begumpet / Banjara / Jubilee Hills) at all hrs. The fastest I have reached is 50 mins (early morning) and the slowest was 1 hr 25 (via Old City).

If you are not carrying too much luggage - you can take the airport shuttles which run from 4 prominent locations in the city to the airport for Rs. 95 per passenger. The shuttles are avl from 0330 to 2330 at 30 min intervals.

one newspaper report stated that the flight could not land because of bad weather

Do you really believe the newspapers??

Yes it's been raining in Hyderabad for the last few days. Unless the KLM plane was made of toilet paper, I don't see why the pilot was scared of landing it in HYD.

The reason was plain and simple, the pilot had no clue he was supposed to land at the new airport. He did what he was supposed to do, he wasn't at fault. He followed the set procedure.

Yesterday's Times of India reported that the ATC told the KLM pilot that he will be landing in Shamshabad airport as Begumpet has closed down.

"Shamshabad? What's that?" the pilot reportedly asked , and flew to Delhi.

actual distance to airport is 5.5 KM more

Hi
in the evening I went for a casual drive to see the new airport...... from my odometer reading I found that the actual distance to the airport is actually 5.5 KM more if you come from mehdipatnam route...... the distance-s as displayed on road signs are actually till start of approach road to airport ......... from there arrival/departure gate is another 5.5 KM extra........so if you are taking a metered taxi, you will have to pay 5.5*Rs.15 = Rs. 83 extra
