My trip to the airport will go up from 15 min to more than an hour..

The airport is expected to be one of the most modern in India. The approach roads, however are reported to be way behind schedule. especially the elevated expressway to the city.

Its a pity that they dont continue operations in the Begumpet airport at least for the low-cost airlines. Such a convenient place in the middle of the city..

Oh and they are adding some usage fee for all passengers in the new airport.

I have a feeling they will keep the old airport operational for awhile, because of the connectivity issues Bigzero mentions.

Of what use is an airport if getting to it is a pain?

As Capt correctly pointed out infrastructure is a key weakness in India and especially roads..

Our company has sent out an official communication to all employees in Hyderabad on the new airport.

Key points mentioned:

- all domestic and international flights will be from the new airport from midnight of 15th March / early morning 16th
- approx distance from Begumpet airport, 40 Km.
- expected travel time to the airport ( from around the old one ) - minimum of 2 hours ( I am hoping this is during daytime - may be a little over an hour early in the morning, I guess. )

Oh neat, it replaces an airport that went so dilapidated so fast. Its a little far out but if its where I think it is not at all inconvenient to Safilguda. Where is Keshav just now..

The UPA president Sonia Gandhi on Friday inaugurated India’s first green field airport named as Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad near Hyderabad amid great fanfare in the presence of Union Aviation Minister Praful Kumar Patel and Andhra Chief Minister Y S R Reddy; by burning lamps and unveiling the plaque and a painting of her late husband, former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on which Shamshabad airport has been christened.
However, the operation of flight would not begin as per decided scheduled that was planned to begin from Sunday (March 16) morning at 01:00 am, as per Civil Aviation minister announced after completing the inauguration.

“The airport is fully ready, but it will now start operations within a maximum of 10 days,” said Praful Patel. The rumours began to storm among the public and corporate in which some said that airport was not completely ready to begin the flight operation as per earlier decided scheduled of the inauguration on March 28 while GMR, the manufacturer of the airport has requested to Sonia Gandhi to inaugurate it on March 14, on the day of stone foundation.

Sonia Gandhi on March 14, 2005 had laid the foundation to build the airport. That’s why GMR wanted to hold the inauguration ceremony on the same day of its foundation ceremony day.

Imagine the confusion everyone involved will have, with the launch date being deferred at the last minute. And they havent made the new date public yet.

I read it in the paper that it had something to do with a request airline companies made to the ministry - it seems they needed some more time to shift operations. Dont know how far this is true.

I also saw the pic of the Rajiv Gandhi portrait being inaugurated by Ms. Gandhi in the paper. Man, that was one bad portrait!

From what i've been hearing YSR is trying to close down the old Begumpet airport so that he can sell the (very valuable)land the airport sits on and put that money in to the treasury, so he can pay for all the ridiculous programs he's been introducing lately.

New airports for Hyderabad and Bangalore --- getting a lot of stick in the newspapers.

Private/public partnerships, and all the private part of the partnership is interested in is profit. Some of the things I recall off the top of my head:

--- very expensive cab service, instead of the cabs that have been serving the old airport

--- an additional 'user fee' to be levied on those departing

--- Bangalore airport nearly opened without proper testing of Air traffic control facilities. It took a government order to make them do it.

We talk a lot about safety of different airlines; we may have to talk about how safe an airport is now, according to who owns it.

Train, maybe, for the domestic stuff. The article I was reading about the half-hour Chennai/Bangalore flight said that once you have reached your final destination in Bangalore, you might as well have gone by train.
