my new Telugu teacher

I just hired a Telugu teacher to tutor me on weekends. She might be the nicest person I've ever met. Seriously, it's like I found an Indian Marry Poppins.

I can't wait to dig my teeth into the language. Problem is, I just found out that the script I'm writing for my company will be shot in Tamil, damnit. I had assumed it would be translated into Telugu. Oh well, I live in Hyd so I'll learn the Telugu. By this time next year, I'll be Telu-goofy! ..... Okay, I'm incredibly ashamed of that pun and you all should turn your backs on me like they do to wayward cadets at West Point.

Congratulations!

Morelikely you'll be Telugufied.

Just for fun, ask Ms. Telugupoppins to teach you how to pronounce the three 'S' sounds.

After you master that, more fun intended, ask her about how to pronounce the second part of : గురు దక్షిణ.

OTOH, she may have already mentioned that to you.

I have long since learnt, when advised by a 'friend' to go and say some words in their language to a stranger, that only embarrassment, coupled with amusement for the schoolboys present, can result.

Yeah, I've already been tricked once in India (many times in other countries), saying something to the effect of 'spank the monkey' to our receptionist when I thought it was more like 'hello, miss.'

I'm pretty excited for my lesson tomorrow. I don't expect to master Telugu, of course, but I'm looking forward to the work of it. A new language is like a really intricate code to be figured out slowly, ya know?

If I could approach languages like that, I'd probably succeed in learning one!

Are you going to try the writing? I'm told it is a particularly difficult and complicated script.

But it is said to be a poetic language, and many of the songs of carnatic music are written in it.

well, I'm gonna complain - my tax dollars ain't worth much when the US taxpayer funded Telugu English dicktionary is unable to tell me what sulli is:
http://dsal.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/phi...dis play=utf8

On the other hand a simple IT fellow, I think, has gone to the trouble of putting together a multilingual swearing database, that turns up trumps when I go to the relevant language page here:
http://www.it-rx.com/insults/swearing

Bloody juveniles, the lot of you - I just take an academic interest in this.
