Post Guntupalli Near Eluru

Originally Posted by snonymous View Post Anyone been to Guntapalli ancient buddhist site near Eluru and Rajahmundry? I just read an article about it in an old travel magazine, and it seems fantastic. Im attending a function in Chennai mid July and thought I could consider visiting this place since I will be that side anyway. But before I plan anything concrete I want to make sure that it is, not just seems fantastic as in the pictures. I did a Google search but there is not too much detailed information about it beyond what I have already read.

Is it a glorified version of the Kanheri Caves of Mumbai, but on a larger scale? Or something quite different? On the map I saw Koleru lake fairly nearby. Worth combining the two?

Would welcome any info from those who have been there. Also what is July like in this region? Thanks.
Guntupalli (Jeela Karra Gudem) is nearly 31 Kms from Eluru (Rajahmundry is much longer) at Jeelakarra Gudem . If you go by State transport buses, you can catch Jeelakarragudem bus. You can stay in Eluru. One day (Morning to Evening) will be sufficient to cover. There is one Stupa treated as Shivalinga. In fact, People feel it as Shiva Rupam, though it is a Stupam. It (Guntupalli) is worth visiting for its historic importance and I cannot compare with Kanheri Caves as I haven't visited the same.
Kolleru is also nearer to Eluru (about 26 KMs - Kaikaluru is the nearest town in Kolleru Area from Eluru). Kolleru Kota is the place to see amongst many places widely spread in Kolleru Lake area. By staying at Eluru, You can cover both Places and also Dwaraka Tirumala (Locally popular as Chinna Tirupati), a place worth for Pilgrimage.
July has no problems. There may be rains but need not worry. Chances are very few.
