Hyderabad very soon.
As some of you know, I am going to Hyderabad very soon. I will be very much on my own, as my husbad is going for a conference.
Anybody have any suggestions on what to do or what to see? Any recommendation for where to eat/take a cup of coffee? I have some very nice "summer-dresses" but they are all "knee-long" and with straps over my shoulders (my English isn't the best... :-)). I have heard not to wear those, but what happen IF I wear them? (I know, I know, I have asked about this before, but it really bother me that I don't have the "right" clothes...) I am kind of a "shoppaholic" . I have heard pearls are populare in Hyd. Anything else? Thanks in advance. C. Last edited by machadinha : Jan 1st, 2007 at 09:35. Reason: moved to AP forum |

to add, given your shopping plans...
Shilparamam for handicrafts The All India Industrial Exhibition (not really an Industrial exhibition, dunno why its called that)..starting soon, an annual January event) for a huge 'bazaar like' fair like atmosphere and ALL kinds of things on sale from across India in an open air setting. Lots of food and other stuff too, but be careful what you eat. This is within the city. (appropriately called, Exhibition grounds) Warning: Go there in the early afternoon on a weekday, (as there are, without exaggeration, thousands of people there late evening. Be prepared for huge crowds, preferably go with a male companion and watch your wallet/purse, and usual precautions. And Umm, dress appropriately. And haggle. And enjoy yourself. Response to your earlier dress question... nothing will happen; you might get stared at more. But I would avoid wearing those dresses at places like the exhibition though.

Plenty ofshops near Charminar for pearls.
Laad bazaar, is also famous for Hyderabadi bangles if you like that sort of thing. It is a narrow street on one side of Charminar. Dress conservatively as it is old city! |

Don't miss Golconda; it's fantastic! And the bazaar around Charminar is wonderful! Any recommendation for where to eat/take a cup of coffee? There's a very good vegetarian restaurant, the Green Casserole, in the Hotel Harsha on Nampally High Road (near to Hyderabad station). I have some very nice "summer-dresses" but they are all "knee-long" and with straps over my shoulders (my English isn't the best... :-)). I have heard not to wear those, but what happen IF I wear them? (I know, I know, I have asked about this before, but it really bother me that I don't have the "right" clothes...) Well, you could buy a light shawl to wear over the top of these dresses, or you can go to a shop and buy a couple of salwar kameez sets ("the right clothes") to wear while you are there -- if you are a normal size, two sets might cost you 20-30 Euro and keep you from feeling strange about what you are wearing. I am kind of a "shoppaholic" . I have heard pearls are populare in Hyd. Anything else? The local ikat cloth is lovely and you can buy sarongs made of it, or even bedspreads at the Andrah State Emporium (fixed price shop) which is called, I think, Lepakshi. Bidri work, which someone mentioned is from this area and very unusual; it's black metal inset with silver and I've seen some very good-looking pieces.... boxes, jewelry, decorative stuff. It's heavy in your suitcase! |

Shopping is excellent in the twin cities. Check out the mag, Channel 6 for the latest happenings. For pearls I recommend the shop in Gandhi Chowk near Paradise (begins with a G but overwork sets in)..

and Kalanjali (near police control room): worth a visit for handicrafts and the small presents you may want to buy for folks back home.

To all of you, thank you so much! This site is the best. I don't contribute too much now, but I hope I can do better after my trip.
![]() I will have internet-connection at the hotel so I will try to give some reports while I am there. I will bring my laptop because I need to have the connection with my work. My husband is not happy about it because he is affraid it will be stolen. Do I have to take more cautions in Hyderabad than in other cities/countries? Do they have safety boxes that is big enough for a laptop? (Aw, more silly questions... :-)) C. |

If a decent hotel, lock your laptop with a good lock within your suitcase, and you will be fine.
You can also probably leave it in the hotel safe, not sure. |

Oh yeah this baby is HUGE. It's a great place to find EVERYTHING, from jewelry to woodwork to bangles to bedsheets to kurtas to hip clothing and jeans. One thing to check out is the woodworking area, you can get these prices pretty low since they get less customers than other areas. laquer boxes make nice gifts, and if you end up buying a ton of bangles in the Old City (lalbazaar? or is that in delhi), look into picking up a bangle tree. I spent like, days here when it came to hyderabad. It's just a fun atmosphere. be prepared to stand your ground on bargaining! |
