Hyderabad
I'm going to try Hyderabad again; last time I was there, it was at the end of my visit and I found the city overwhelming. Too big, too fast! And I think I had problems finding a hotel because I was travelling alone. I'm much older now, so that shouldn't be a problem. <g>
Do you have a favorite hotel in Hyderabad? Restaurant? Where's the pearl market? Besides the sites covered on the city tour, did you find any wonderful places there? Gretchen |

Where to begin? The pearl market isn't in one place but many. Paradise might be a good base away from some of the madness. I know its a shopping district but the twin cities are even bigger and more crowded now. I'll get you the name of my pearl shop, modest but a good value. Yes, you bargain on big lots. For truly expensive stuff I use a shop near tank bandh but even my modest shop could bring that in on request. Jagadamba is in Gandhi Statue (chowk) just off Paradise. Parsis is a good restaurant there as is Kwality and a Chinese joint that we always go to. (Indian Chinese). There are many good places to shop and eat in Hyderabad. My favorites I'll work up into a list. Without a car or a good auto driver it can be tough. Incidentally there is a good car rental place in Paradise also.

Edward, I would love any info you care to upload!
Parsis? Is that Iranian, or does it just sound that way? It seems I may have a guide -- a friend's daughter-in-law has volunteered her sister -- however, I do need to know where to stay and some places to get her to guide me to! Hiring a car with driver sounds like a good idea -- it's such a large city. Thanks in advance...

My wife is giving me a hard time for not remembering these things even though I was there again last summer. Parsis is a well known restaurant (Indian) with good takeout and an ac upper room (like kwality) and makes a good landmark for auto drivers for the Paradise locale. Nanking is the Chinese restaurant in Paradise but remember Indian Chinese. The good hotels on the way to the Airport and Banjara Hills areas have good food as well, Green Park Hotel, etc.. Many good eateries there also especially Khabura and a bit distant The Place (will need that car/driver). Shopper's World is good as well as Walden's and the new place where Khabura is (I'll enquire). Be careful of the old city due to communal tensions but there is also a good restaurant on the top of a hotel in Abids. There is a good restaurant experience at a Rajasthani theme park (a laugh riot). The owner of Jagdamba started that so ask for a ticket. There is also a crafts park next to HighTech city worth seeing (but well out). All kinds of other parks have come up but I haven't seen them since I domicile in SoCal, waterpark, deer park. I'll try to look for my literature though much of it I keep there. A small mag called Channel 6 and a new competitor are a great help in finding out what is going on! My thing is antiquities but its a trick in Hyderabad without S P Shorey's guidebook. I am sure you have done Golconda and the Qutab Shahi tombs so..

Actually, after weeping at the sight of the Char Minar (which I'd wanted to see since 1971) the only thing I've done in Hyderabad was the bazaar in that same area. I stayed for two nights, got some sleep, and then went back to San Francisco via Pushkar and Delhi. No tombs, no forts, no museums .. I'm practically a Hydrabadi virgin!
Thanks so much for your info. All this (and a few other things I've picked up here and there are going into a Word.doc that is starting to resemble the notebooks I travelled with BEFORE Tony Wheeler invented Lonely Planet. The Rajasthani theme park sounds like a hoot! I'll try to get there, though we are "park'd to death" here in No. California as well. Do let me know if you think of anything else I shouldn't miss! |

Wow is the new local mag that'll give you the info. Several good and expensive restaurants at the White House (!) building at Begumpet, Khabura, Malgudi, a couple of upmarket pubs.
Don't miss Golconda fort and the sound and light show there in the evenings. Use a taxi for this, you don't want to be stuck at Golconda sans transport. For Hyderabadi food Nayaab in the old city is my favourite, but difficult for a Western woman travelling alone. TRy the various branches of Hyderabad House (Begumpet, Banjara Hills, Himayathnagar, and Lakdi-ka-Pul). Also Rainbow on Abids for haleem . For very decently priced brass and bronze (the latter very collectible) try Vishwakarma Art Gallery on NIMS road, near Meena baazar. Your best bet would be to hire a private taxi for the day for places like Golconda, use the city taxi services, (numbers can be found in Wow or Channel 6) as they are metered. Let me know if you need any further info. Apana |

Apana, thanks for all the info. I"m expecting to have a companion for sightseeing -- the daughter-in-law of a friend -- so maybe we will be able to get to restaurants that might otherwise be a problem.
How about a good place to buy bidriware? And where is Khadi Bahavan (Handloom House)? I've seen some beautiful ikat from Hyderabad and want to buy some! |

Bidri ware is available at a shop near Rainbow on Abids. Its an 'official' shop.
Not sure about khadi, every state has a showroom, but there is one opposite Hotel Dwaraka at Lakdi-ka-Pul. By-the-by a new photo gallery Images of Hyderabad Trees is now up on my site indianphotojournalist.org Best, Apana |

Yes, the APT offers tours out of its Secunderabad office (just outside Paradise). They offer some good values on jaunts outside the cities. The Museums in Hyderabad are pretty flaky but if you can work ahead for permission at least one of the Palaces could be open. The one museum of note which I would generously refer to as eclectic has a punitive pricing and most of the good stuff has been looted by the staff. Keshav, help me out on one more. There is a good Andhra place on the way to Walden's on the left side. Do you know the name and particulars?

Thanks to Keshav, Apana, Edward and india-welcomes for all the splendid advice. I might have to plan on staying in Hyderabad quite a long time!
Apana, I saw the "Trees of Hyderabad" photos -- they are most enjoyable! |

Is it Seema's you are referring to? This has come in place of Chilly's. Or is it Costal spice? Or maybe Malgudy Days (this is in the same building as Kabura)?
Left side? Going from which direction? Maybe this will help!!! |
