Hyderabad Flyover Collapse

This city has not had a good month at all...my friends and I were spending our Sunday at the Marriott and on the way home, two of them were 3 cars behind this collapse.

10 feared killed in Hyderabad flyover collapse
Indo-Asian News Service
Hyderabad, September 09, 2007

At least 10 persons were feared killed and several were trapped as a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed in Hyderabad on Sunday evening, police and eyewitnesses said.

The mishap occurred in the busy Nagarjuna Circle area in the heart of the Andhra Pradesh capital amid heavy rains. Huge concrete slabs and equipment fell on the vehicles passing on either side of the Punjagutta flyover.

At least 10 cars, three auto rickshaws and a few two-wheelers were crushed under the collapsed portion of the flyover. Some pedestrians, who were standing under the flyover to protect themselves from rains, were also feared trapped, according to eyewitnesses.

Ambulances were rushed to the spot and at least 15 injured were shifted to the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).

It was not clear how many more were trapped under the debris. Continuing rains are hampering the rescue efforts.

The flyover is aimed at decongesting one of the busiest commercial areas in the city. The flyover is coming up on the road that connects the Begumpet airport to the Hitec City that houses a number of IT and BPO firms.

Once again, in such a short time, we fear for our friends there.

Our sympathies to all affected by what sounds like a dreadful disaster.

TV says 20 people dead, and some cars etc trapped in rubble.

Thankfully, the downpour has stopped awhile ago.

I was there, and I thought that the persons incharge of the construction and the emergency situation after the tragedy should be shot out of hand.

The Times of India, today, with a very watered down version, maybe because the people reporting have no idea how these things should be done.

Times of India.. Rescue operation goes for a toss

(Chief Minister) Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had threatened to blacklist Gammon India for the delay in the flyover completion, but had apparently softened his stand and the flyover completion date moved by another few months to November. It was then said that Gammon had subcontracted the work to local parties with close connections with the state government. It has been speculated that the company had only lent its name for the project and designs.

If I may be allowed to design the frontpage for tomorrow's newspapers:-

-xyz says enquiry will be ordered, one more retired High Court Judge to get employment for 3 years.
-opposition blames government, wants CBI inquiry
-government blames opposition, says contracts given by last government
-Opposition and Government meet for cocktails to discuss latest on the tragedy.
-CM announces xyz compensation for familes of dead, and only xy for injured.
-Poll conducted by newspapers, majority of Hyderabadis consider it a shame that the nearby shopping mall is now less approachable. Please SMS to 2345 if you agree.
-Stockmarkets touch new high. Finance Minister says flyover collapse and recent terrorist attacks will not effect business in Hyderabad.
-Advertisement on the front page: Buy one baseball cap. Get a brain free.

Oh Captain, I really don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Only one literary passage, which I consider a masterpiece, has made me do both at once --- but you come close.

Is it time India put the lid on development and tried to catch up with where it is now?
