My option is obviously Hampi. One of the most interesting places in the world.

Hampi, hampi, hampi.
The guest houses at hampi are ok if you are not too finicky about accomodation. Otherwise you can stay at hotel mallagi in hospet(this option is feasible only if you have your own vehicle... otherwise traveling to and fro between hampi and hospet every day will be a pain.) |

Hampi could be expensive choice during Dec
Hi,
Since Dec. is the peak period, accommodation could be expensive for budget travelers like me. But you may love the crowd, love the historical places/ruins in and around Hampi.... If you are a photographer, you may at least need 4-5 days of stay ( provided its not overcast ).... staying at Hospet is not advisable since its 13 kms away from Hampi... you may miss the sunrise and/or sunset..... Dont know Araku valley near Vizag... But we may be in Vizag during new year ( not as tourists ).... Wish you happy holidays... regards Sundar Palaniappan... http://www.pbase.com/psundar/hampi ( my Hampi pics ) |

Aaraku is a nice place. But you need to explore the areas near by.
You can stay at Tada and explore into the Anantagiri range OR travel to Chitrakut falls and back to Vizag. If you like trekking, you can go for a 4 day trek from sivalingapuram -> peda bedda -> walasi -> borja -> sunkarametta -> borra caves.

If you are looking for a 4 day weekend,
then I suggest you go to Aaraku. Aaraku (4 day) -------------- a) You can do the following trek. sivalingapuram -> peda bedda -> walasi -> borja -> sunkarametta -> borra caves b) You can explore Tyda (1 day), Aaraku / Borra Caves (1 day), Travel 1 day and spend the other day in Travel / Vizag beaches. c) You can visit Aaraku and Chitrakut falls. If you are looking for a 2 day weekend, then I suggest you go to Hampi Hampi (2 day) ------------- Hampi exploration - 1 day You can cover Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami - 1 day (hire a motor cycle) |

Dont think the OP is looking for trekking.
Araku and surrounding areas are beautiful, no doubt about it. But Hampi is far better as a destination. And 2 days are minimum for hampi - not including badami etc. if you want to include badami Aihole etc then make it 3-4 days. |
