Which museum? Salarjung? You can travel either by auto or taxi. Better hire a car for a day and go around. Most of the places are close enough to the city except Ramoji film city. You can catch a special bus if you have plans to go there.
Salarjung museum is located in the older part of the city and i can't think of any hotels in that area. If you are going by train, get down at Hyderabad(called as Nampally locally) railway station and check out the budget hotels on the road opposite to the station. There are many.No need to book in advance. You can go to the museum in 15-20mins from any of hotels near station.
If you get down at Secunderabad station instead, you will still need to travel to Hyderabad station, unless you want to make a longer journey to the museum.

I have written before on my stay in the Hotel Suhail, in early 2009. This is in Abids, I think that's the area you walk into coming from Nampally railway station. (Or drive -- it's a short walk, 20 minutes or so, but with your packs and not knowing your way, I'd grab a ride for it.)The Old City would be walkable from here in say a half hour or so I think, though I'd normally grab a bus or cab/autorickshaw. (City buses as so often and as a foreigner I found not that terribly easy to figure out, btw. They are however certainly available, and didn't strike me as badly organized, either.)

I had just a fine stay here.Few years ago of course, no idea about today.

So get out the station's main entrance, walk on just a little, then this is the first main crossing street you come across. From another pic's description of mine (indeed taken from a bar & restaurant and hotel there), I think it would have to be called Mukkaramjahi Rd.; though a glance at Google Maps would suggest it may (also?) be known as Nizam Shahi Rd.: http://www.indiamike.com/india-image...reet-hyderabad. Either way, you can't miss it.

Check out Accor Group's Hotel Mercure. It is, I think, 4-star and opposite Nampally Railway Station. And yes, it is a pure veggie place though alcohol is available and allowed. Should be able to get a room for approx. USD 50 per night.

Someone I know had stayed at the Hotel Grand Plaza in Nampally, opposite Public Gardens. Did not have anything too negative to say.

I've taken the buses in Hyderabad; they are so crowded but people were very nice. I did have to share my seat with several people. If I hadn't been getting out at the end of the line (Char Minar), I probably would have taken a ricksha.
Some years ago, I stayed at Hotel Harsha in Abids; it has become more expensive over the years but their restaurant was very good and it was a safe place to be.

Hello Menka, staying in Nampally/Abids is a good option as its close to the museum.Hotel Quality inn residency in Nampally and hotel Mercure are the good ones. Don't forget to visit Tajmahal hotel in Abids for some great food!
I just stayed almost 2 weeks at 1800 rupies/day Hotel Mandakini Jaya International. Seemed fair to me. I did try a few others before that that I didnt like.
Near to that hotel, 1-2 km away there was a tulip inn which I believe was 4000 rupies/day and it seemed a lot better. Had a roof top pool.
Autorickshaw was fine for getting around. But do get a GPS and plan your trip in advance, so much easier.
