Getting Around In Hyderabad
Which is the cheapest and most convenient mode of transport in Hyderabad?
1. Bus from Airport to the city center around Nampally station? 2. Is the local train system reliable? Which are the main stations nearest to the most famous tourist spots? 3. Are autos metered? What kind of rates apply? Please enlighten with any tips and anecdotes on this subject. Thank you. |

Cheapest would be buses. Most convenient, autorickshaws.
Local trains are just about taking off. Am told there are some delays. Autos are metered, but are slowly starting to ask for rates off the meter. |

buses and autos
1. Bus from Airport to the city center around Nampally station? In my experience it is very difficult to find the buses from the airport. you could wlk down the road with all your luggage, till you get to the main road and risk you life running across it to cathch a 49 or so down to Nampally. but i would't recommend it System at airport relies on prepaid autos (which are relatively expensive, but they've got you more or less trapped up there.....)2. Is the local train system reliable? Which are the main stations nearest to the most famous tourist spots? trains are reliable, but infrequent and not that handy for tourist spots. your best bet here is buses - to golconda or to ramoji film city it will cost you a fortune in an auto and only a few rupees on the bus. buses can be a bit hectic - especially if you are a bloke, since buses in Hyderabad are segregated by gender (back for men, front for women). but still worth it. call the tourist baord for information on what buses to take, or buy the little 10 rupee booklet available at all major bu stands 3. Are autos metered? What kind of rates apply? autos are metered. if they won't take you on meter wait for the next one or walk to another corner. you might encounter problems if you are a) white or b) standing next to a tourist spot. but in general it should be a problem. just insist on meter. Rate I seemt o remember is about 12 rupees for first km, then 1 rupee per 'something' after that. |

Autos are the most convenient - however, remember that the auto drivers can be arrogant in that at night they may refuse to go to some places just because they can refuse. So, you may need to sweet talk them or pay double for them to return empty.

You can also break up the journey, say going to Paradise (well known area) and then getting a local automan to Safilguda (nearby suburb)..
