The train journey from Vizag through the Araku Valley to Koraput and Kirandul is said to be one of the most scenic train trip in India, I am determined to get there soon.
There is only one train a day in either direction. Train 1VK departs Vizag at 07:45 and gets to Borraguhalu at 10:11, and Araku at 11:15 (then Koraput 14:05, Jagdalpur 17:25, Kirandul 22:30) Train 2VK Departs Kirandul at 05:30, Jagdalpur 09:50, Koraput 13:10, Araku 15:35, Borraguhalu 16:40 and gets back to Vizag at 20:15. Dear Steven,
APTTDC, that is, A.P.Travel & Tourism Development Corporation, organises a Train-Bus Trip to Araku. -------- They will take you to Araku by Train. In Araku Station, there will be four buses inj waiting. These four buses will fan our around Araku and after Lunch (***provided by APTTDC), they will depart for Borra Caves, and after Borra Caves, there will be a brief stop-over in Tyda and finally you are near RTC Complex, VSKP by 22.00 hrs. ----- If tourists choose, this, they can have a glance at - both Bus Route and also Train Route, since none of them can be missed. ========== V.Srinivasa Prasad Hyderabad 3.6.2005/14.55 hrs. |

During our college days we used to bike all the way to borra caves, ananthgiri, similiguda and araku (120 KMS one way)...my favorite place used to be similiguda where you feel chill even in the hot summer...and its a different thrill if you go on bikes. |

It is between Tyda and Araku, in fact between the Borra and Araku stations. It has lush green landscaped hills with some farming around and is very beautiful. I also liked that place. Tyda could be reached by the same train that departs at morning from Vizag. This is the only passenger train in this route. Regarding the Rail-cum-Bus package by APTDC, I do not prefer it. A place like Araku needs a day or two in the minimum as a stopover to explore the surroundings. Apart from normal sightseeing in a day, including the Borra Caves from Araku, one should explore the area on his own feet and may go to the tribal villages a 2-3 km away. I still remember the beauful hill surrounding valley and my walk on the village paths. The best place to stay is Mayuri Tourist Lodge (APTDC). Booking should be done in advance. It offers great views of the valley. There are dwelling places at Tyda and Borra Caves also. One should also proceed to Koraput and Jagdalpur for the two beautiful waterfalls of this region, the train goes past Araku to Koraput and then to Jagdalpur. Those who are from Kolkata or Bhubhaneshwar, can also come back directly from Koraput. There is direct train through another picteresque route. regards, Bhaswaran ![]() |

Does anybody have any idea about the conducted tour being offered by APTDC for Vishak - Araku - Jagdalpur - Vishak (5 days).
I want to make a trip not only to Araku but also want to visit Chitrakoot waterfall near Jagdalpur. I have basically two option, either to take the conducted tour or to plan myself. Also, how is the train from Koraput to Kolkata which nearly takes 24 hrs!!! |

Dear Bhaswaran,

The Koraput-Rayagada Train Route is full of tunnels and a beautiful horse-shoe curve near rauli Rai;lway Station. A must-see Train Route. I have done this route alongwith other IRFCians from Madras in February,2007. |

The distance from Araku to machkund would be around 90 Kms. Please look at this:-
---- 14 ARK ARAKKU 1 10:50 10:55 132 1 15 GPJ GORAPUR 1 11:07 11:08 142 1 16 DPC DARLIPUT 1 11:27 11:28 155 1 17 PFU PADUA 1 11:41 11:42 165 1 18 BHJA BHEJA 1 12:05 12:06 175 1 19 MKRD MACHHAKUNDA 1 12:24 12:25 186 1 -------------- ##This is Machhkunda Road Station, from where actual Machhkund Project place would be around 30 Kms.; and from Machhkund, Onakadilli will be around 20 Kms. ##A little before Bheja, there is a diversion to Jolaput Project site. ##I am afraid, it could be difficult to cover DUDUMA,MACHKUND,ANANTGIRI,BORR A in 2 days!! ##Since you are planning to take your own Vehicle, tell the driver to reach Araku Railway Station by about 11.00 hrs. and you travel by Train from Visakhapatnam to Araku. In the return journey, after completing Duduma & Machkund, you can also visit Borra, Tyda, Anantagiri. |
