Dear Friends,I'm new to extremely informative and wonderful IM site.I(30),along with my mother(56),have planned to visit Tirupati Balaji,Srikalahasti,Kanipakam, Kanchipuram,Vellore Golden Temple and Rameshwaram between aug 15-20 this year.I would be grateful to you if could help me in finalising my itinery.I'm visiting this part of our country for the first time.A rough plan is given below :
Aug 15 : Reaching tirupati airport at 1.40 pm,from there proceed to tirumala by bus, accommodation at TTD guest house and sudarsham(Rs.50/-) ticket for 9-10 pm slot already booked....By what time can we expect to finish darshan...Will it be possible to visit nearby places at tirumala before lord balaji darshan.
Aug 16-18:Temples in and around tirupati,Srikalahasti,Kanipaka m, Kanchipuram,Vellore Golden Temple...(very confused..how to visit these places and in what order),also i've planned to stay at tirupati and thought to cover these places as day trip from tirupati.
Aug 18 : Catch Rameshwaram express, dep 5 pm from chennai(confused whether to catch it from chennai or from chengalpattu at 6 pm... if visit vellore golden temple on 18 august).
Aug 19: Reach rameswaram at 4.45 am...don't know where to put up..please tell me some good and budget accommodation for a day as i'll leave for chennai by train at 5 pm.Please also tell me the procedure for darshan at Sri ramanathanswamy temple..i also intend to see sphatik shivlingam.will it be possible to visit Dhanuskodi as I wish to visit this place. We are visiting Rameswaram primarily for lord shiva darshan and also to see important places related to ramayana. Please also tell a good place for eating.
Aug 20 : Arrive chennai by 6.30am and catch return flight at 9.10 am.

Any modification to above plan is welcome except the train/air and darshan tickets as they have been already booked and can not be cancelled.

I will try to answer some. Sri Kalahasthi, Tirupathi, Vellore, Kancheepuram is the order. Chengalpet is closer to Kancheepuram/Vellore. But connection trains are not found available. Hence bus is the only option.
Boarding from Chennai Egmore could be done if started at least 4 hours in advance from Kancheepuram by bus to Koyambedu Bus Stand and then to Chennai Egmore by city bus.
Rameswaram train starts from there.
I am not sure about accommodation and food at Rameswaram.
For Danushkodi, you have to hire a jeep from Rameswaram (near Temple) It will cost you Rs 1000 or more. Or catch a Danushkodi bus. Get down at the last stop. Shared trucks will be available for Rs. 50 or slightly more per head. But that is not desirable since they will be packed. So better catch a jeep from Rameswaram temple premises itself.
If you have a day more, you could have added Tiruvannamalai and Chidambaram to the trip and board from Villupuram to Rameswaram.

If your accommodation at Tirumala is booked, then ideally reach Tirumala directly from the airport. If your darshan is booked for 9pm it will take about 2.5 hours for you come out of the temple.

The TTD runs a Local temples service which will take you to some of the nearby temples. The bus leaves from the choultry (Govindarajaswamy choultry) behind the Railway station and they have a few services per day. You may also check at the Srinivasam complex close to the bus station if they have the same service. The advantage is that you get to see temples that are important and you don't need to wait/buy darshan tickets etc. Its very quick. And it won't touch the temples that you plan to visit.

Srikalahasti is to the east while Kanipakam is to the west. These can be done along with a few others in a day if you are quick by public transport, or you can hire a car for a day. Considering that you have the whole of 16,17 and 18 you will be able to do these at a leisurely pace.

hi,
All the best to you and your mother for this holy trip.
How do you intend to travel from tirumala to kalahasti, kanipakam, kanchi and vellore ?
Here are some of my inputs :
AUG 15 = Arriving at chennai airport @ 1.40 pm and then you have to be tirumala by 7 pm, check into your room, freshenup and then reach the Q complex by 8 pm. This will give you 5 hours of travel time from chennai airport to tirmuala(not tirupati)
If you take a taxi from chennai airport to chennai city/Mofusil bus, then take a bus/train to reach tirupati and then reach tirumala within 5 hours by public
transport ?
I would advice you to travel to tirumala directly from the airport.
AUG 16 = You can visit temples in tirupati, mangapuram and kalahasti by taxi/shared jeeps and stay back at tirupati,
AUG 17 = If you are very eager to visit kanipakam, you can take a direct bus to kanipakam or take a bus to chittor and then to kanipakam for more frequencies and
it is roughly 75 kms from tirupati and then travel to vellore (50 kms) and proceed to kanchi for the night stay.
AUG 18 = visit temples in kanchi and then proceed to chengalpattu(40 Kms) to board the train to rameshwaram
AUG 19 = reach rameshwaram around 5 am, the spatika lingam darshan starts at 5 am in the morning and last for an hour or so. You have to rush up at all the places to catch your 5 pm train to chennai. You have some gujurathi places where food is served in addition to some south indian restaurants.
hope i gave you some valuable info,
please post your doubts and queries.
with regards

Thanks N Kumar..you have made my job easier.I'll prefer public transport(Bus/Train).
1) I'll land at Tirupati @ 1.40 pm..so I think there will be quite some time to visit nearby places in tirumala before Lord's darshan.
2)Aug 16: Can you suggest me the important temples to visit in and around tirupati which can be covered in a span of 5-6 hours as we will also be visiting Srikalahasti on the same day.
3)How is bus/train frequency between vellor-kanchee and kanchee-chengalpattu.
4)Please tell me the important temples & places which should be covered in kancheepuram and Rameshwaram.
5)Is there any procedure for darshan in Sriramanathaswamy temple in rameshwaram....i mean relating to bathing in sea and kunds(don't know exactly)?
6)Do you feel is there any other important religious/holy place, which I'm missing in the itinerary, and could be added to this trip ?

Thanks narendra for the reply. Can you slightly elaborate the following points from the reply as I didn't get them..(pardon me).
1)You may also check at the Srinivasam complex close to the bus station if they have the same service. The advantage is that you get to see temples that are important and you don't need to wait/buy darshan tickets etc. Its very quick. And it won't touch the temples that you plan to visit.
2)Srikalahasti is to the east while Kanipakam is to the west. These can be done along with a few others in a day if you are quick by public transport, or you can hire a car for a day

The Local Temples bus mentioned in the post above starts from the Govindarajaswamy Choultry behind the Railway station. I have taken it quite a few times in the past and is quite good. I had heard that a similar (or same bus) service exists at the Srinivasam complex next to the bus stand. Whether it is the same bus (never did the bus go to the Srinivasam complex when i took it) or another bus that does local temples is unknown.

The temples that the bus touches do not include Kanipakam and Srikalahasti. It does cover other important temples like the Tiruchanur Temple, The Alivelumangapur temple and the Govindarajaswamy Temple near the Rail station and the Kodandaramaswamy temple, Kapilateertham and a few others. Worth it.

Was mentioning about the opposing direction in which Srikalahasti and Kanipakkam fall, so that trying to do them together may not be ideal. If you can include them with any other temples along the way and beyond it makes sense that way. That is what I meant.

Thanks Narendra..I got your point. Can you tell me the timings of this bus service(preferably the morning one)and how much time it takes to cover all the temples in tirupati and nearby places.I plan to visit Srikalahasti by bus/train in the afternoon on that very day.

It was a few years ago, but I think it was at 6.00AM, 09.30 AM and later at 02.00PM. The same bus does all the trips, so takes about 3 hours. Be a little early as you may not get place to sit if you get late. The fare was I think around 30 INR.

There are a few other local temple bus services as well. You should enquire at any TTD office as well as RTC bus counter.

Hi,
here are some of my suggestions :
Aug 15 = Arrival at renigunta airport (1.40 pm), i feel by the time you reach tirumala it might be around 5.00 pm, check into your room, relax, freshen up and walk around the temple town, have your dinner and then proceed towards the q complex for the darshan. It might take roughly 2-3 hours for the darshan.
Aug 16 = Proceed towards tirupati, on the way visit if possible visit kapelathirtham,
then govindarajaswamy temple , padmavathy temple and later visit Kalahasti temple and return back to tirupati.
Here are some of the links which might be useful.
http://www.tirumala.org/ptv_packagetours.htm
Aug 17 = Start early towards kanipakam ganesha temple and from towards velore and if possible catch a bus to kanchi which is roughly 40 kms or you can stay here.
Aug 18 = Travel to kanchi, visit the temples
Kailasanathar Temple
Kamakshi Amman Temple
Varadarajar Temple
Vaikunta Perumal Temple
and later travel to chengalpattu to catch the train to rameshwaram.
Aug 19 = visit the temple and have bath at the 21 or so kundams /thirthams and later on catch the train to chennai,
Please feel free to post your doubts and queries

What are the best ways (package tours, self ticketing etc) to visit Tirupati over a weekend? I am in Chennai for this weekend, and was hoping to get some directions on the best alternative.

Also can I carry my camera along while going to the main temple?

Have been able to shortlist this one after some initial research : http://aptdc.in/tourpack/chennai.php however am not sure of which one to select...

Any help would be great!
Cheers,

You can't carry camera/phone or any electronics with you while going for darshan.

APTDC Tirumala tour is the easiest and most convinient as well as fastest if you are short of time or planning to do it on yoir own. Qjuite worth it is what I have heard, though I have never used APTDC. Especially considering the Huge rush now for darshan and the APTDC tour has special entry without waiting.

Thank you! I am hoping there would be cloak rooms to keep my stuff while I wait for the darshan!

yes, there is a special counter to leave phones, electronics etc. It may be better and faster to leave them with your luggage in the bus if you are taking the APTDC tour or any other place the Tour guide advices you to.
