Wanted - Ferry Schedule

I've read and read, looking for a ferry information and since the subject is still not straighted out, I'm floating it back again.

The full subject:
1. Updated ferry schedule
2. How to book, prices, how much in advance
3. Are foreigners still allowed in the bunk class
4. Alternative flights available for foreigners booking from abroad

Anything!!
Many thanks for the ones who did it and can add.

Chennai > Port blair or
Kolkata > Port blair

Of course

Inner Andaman ferries are a much easier case.

Look here: http://www.and.nic.in/spsch/sailing.htm

It's pretty up-to-date.

Hi, I took the ferry last year from Chennai (at the end of Feb).

From what I remember, there is a ferry to Port Blair every 10 days. You can buy your ticket down at the port, best to do it about a week in advance, but no need to book it from abroad.

There is a tourists quota. In bunk class you will be put with all the other foreigners.

My ticket cost 1550 Rupees, we were on the ferry for 3 nights. Please note that if they catch you with alcohol, it will be confiscated (happened to us....).

Bunk class is a sweat box, I slept the first night down there, but slept out on deck the next two nights, much nicer!

In spite of it all, I really liked the trip, you get to meet a lot of other travellers, and it makes arrival at PB all the sweeter.

Have a great trip!

Sorry, I should add that you'll need to bring 4 or 5 passport size photos with you, along with some photocopies of your passport and visa when you're buying your ticket at the port.

Conor,
Thank you for the info. I think if more people will share their experiences about transportation to the islands this thread could turn out very useful.

5 passport photos for a ferry ride is quite a lot. Only God knows what are these for...

The same holds for flights. It's not possible to buy tickets of Air Deccan from abroad at the moment (at least, if you don't have an indian credit card...), *but* why not try to book tickets after arriving in India? For tomorrow (9.2.) you can book a flight Chennai-Port Blair for 3999,- Rs. including taxes. That's only about 70€ and saves you from a 3-night ferry trip...

Greetings, Mio

Air Deccan has the following points of sale:

* Bangalore & Chennai City Office Counters
* Air Deccan Website (www.airdeccan.net)
* All India 24 / 7 call centre at 39008888
* Airport Counters
* Travel Agents across India
* Reliance Web Worlds in 228 cities in India
* Indiatimes Website (www.airdeccan.indiatimes.com)
* Club HP Outlets in 7 states in India

See http://www.airdeccan.net/airdeccan/faq_web.asp#How%20do%20I%20boo k%20Air%20Deccan%20tickets

Of course, you have to be at the counter or travel agent, when the offices are open , but there you can pay via cash.

Another quote from the Air Deccan web site:
For bookings made online and through the call centre the payment has to be remitted by credit card. At other points of sale, payment can be made either via cash or by credit card.
