Special Andaman Permit.

Just been to the IHC in London to drop off my passport and asked about Andaman permits. The lady there advised me to get one in India as she wasn't sure about whether or not tourist permits would be valid in a months time and told me not to "waste my money" but to wait and get one from an airport in India??Can anyone elaborate on this please.

Thanks

Mark.

permits are free on arrival at port blair airport. If you fly in and have a return ticket you should be able to get 30 days.

Ask for 30 days though with an appropriate date of departure on any kind of legal arrival..

Thanks for the reply guys-I was there this time last year and got mine on arrival in Port Blair for 30 days, but got the impression it had changed by what she was saying - though in retrospect I suspect she doesn't really know.

But from what you are both saying nothing has changed.

Thanks.

Mark.

what has changed, is if a person arrives on a one way ticket the authorities give fifteen days(renewable)..That of course means the inconvienience of going to Port Blair and having all the hassles.

What has changed is that if you are in the UK it's now easier to get Restricted Area Permits (RAPs) in advance, at the same time as your visa.

If you are applying in the UK for an Indian visa, and complete your visa application online, one of the questions you have to answer is "Are you going to any restricted areas?"

Answering yes results in an automatic application for the RAP and an additional charge of £20!

My expierience is that you still only get fifteen day for 20 quid if bought in a consulate wherever. Upon arrival at Port Blair you get the same thing for free + no hassle, and if you arrive by plane with a valid return ticket they often give a 30 day visa. If you arrive without a return ticket you will be given a fifteen day visa that can only be renewed/extended in Port Blair at the immigration office(not at airport)one then becomes victim of the immigration office queue and the most uncomfortable boat ticket queue. It is also my observation that if a person arriving looks like they have been dossing for some time then its a fifteen day visa..So clean and tidy,if only for entering Port Blair helps get a longer stay.

Damn, just came across this. Got my visa from London and ticked that box, cost me £20 but they did grant 45 days.
