sand flies really bad?

hi guys,

I'm just wondering about the sand flies on Havelock island. Are they really that bad? I have a tendency to break out in a rash/hives if i get too many bites from mosquitoes, bugs, etc. so i'm a bit worried. I will be going there in mid-Jan. and am really excited! I just hope i'm not going to spend my entire holiday applying cream to myself and feeling all itchy...

thanks,

akhenaton.

Don't worry about it, the sand flies tend to congregate in certain areas, which you'll become aware of when you get there, even if you do get bit, they're really not that bad, and definately won't ruin your trip..........just try not to make them bleed, as tropical infections CAN ruin your trip..........

Have a great trip........

Conor.

Ya i agree i wouldn't worry about them. I was on Havelock for 2 weeks and never seemed to have a problem with the little buggers. Just in case though make sure you pack yourself some good 100% deet repellant.

sand flies either go for you, or leave you alone...it depends on your body type.

i spent a month on havelock a couple of trips ago...and while i had no problem with the sand flies,my partner got bitten - big time - but she has the same problem with mosquitoes.

(there's some work going on to develop an insect repellent that can duplicate the natural "body odour" that deters sand flies/mosquitoes etc)

unfortunately whatever you use (deet included) washes off when you swim, or sweat...

and as conor recommends - don't scratch the bites - infected bites are no fun.
