malaria protection is a continuous debate.I personally will not use prophylactics(anti malaria medicine),but i do use different types of mosquito repelants.A large selection of repelants are available from Blacks camping or cotswoldsoutdoors. Both enterprises have retail shops and online purchasing facilities.
You may ,or may not know that anti malaria tablets damage the liver and cause nausea and headaches in many people. Big cash is not the best idea but travellers cheques may be an option for your situation. I cannot say if visa debit is useful on Havelock or elsewhere in India. Dressing with mossie protection in mind is also wise especially at twilight times and early evening. Also sitting in places exposed to wind is usually a mossie free zone. Lots of folk go to Havelock without prior booking, but at the very peak holiday times ie Christmas and new year accomodation can be a tad difficult to find. See Kolkata forum for some interesting mossie discussion. All the best. |

i didn't take malaria tablets but used the plug in mozzie detractor. those are very efficient and easily available. even the cane huts i stayed in, had electricity. but i definitely got bitten at times.

Unless you have taken antimalaria medication before let me urge you strongly against taking it. I had lived here for almost 3 years before I got malaria and I have never been very careful about not getting bitten. Once I got malaria they put me on the quinine pills and I had a horrible allergic reaction and ended up in the hospital not from the malaria but from the pills. If you do decide to take the pills make sure you start taking them several weeks before you come so that you will know how your body will react to the medicine. As Martinez mentioned it is strong medicine and can have bad side effects. Better to wear proper clothing and use nets/coils/plug-ins.

Yes, thankfully I had already gotten rid of the fever when the side effects kicked in. Actually, I think the doctor might have for whatever reason, changed the medicine he had been giving me. Whatever the case, it's done and over now. Thank goodness. On a sad note, my Dr. had me eat vanilla ice cream with the medicine (about the only thing I could eat while I had the fever) to reduce the effects. It's been about 3 months and I still feel a little nauseous at the thought of vanilla.
But I'm ready for butterscotch and chocolate any time !By the way, Kalbari, thanks for asking. |

There are NO ATM machines or swipe machines at havelock. You would need to withdraw the money at port blair and then goto havelock. You can contact vinne or pritha and get more details(email on the dive india site).

i would imagine the resorts connected to the dive operators, would have security matters well in hand as they know people are arriving with lots of cash.
