The distance from Chennai and Kolkata to Port Blair is about the same and in the tourist season the trip is around three days and nights. Maybe in monsoon time heavy seas it is longer?
Apparently, the best cabins are very good, but not cheap, and bunk dormitory accomodation is a bit rough, especially in bad weather due to regurgitated foodstuffs. Exact details of trip times ,bookings, ship names etc, etc, are available on this forum.
Sorry i cant remember where,exactly.

I just found this site which seems to be official.

You can find the links to sailing schedules and fares on the home page, but no idea if it is up-to-date.

U can also travel 4 berths in a cabin.
I think booking at Port Blair is done only after the ship arrives at the port. You can check this info by calling The Shipping Corp of India office 03192-233347.If there is any problem of returning be prepared to extend ur holiday.
Chennai-P Blair is most frequent.once a month sailing is also there from Vishakapatnam.I think a railway reservation counter for tickets on the mainland railways is operational,pl chek on www.indianrail.gov.in (amongst the numerours sites of the railways i found www.srailway.com the best)

I found a broschour at the Indian embassy when I was getting my visa here in stockholm about how to book tickets, when and where they depart, how long it takes etc etc. Unfourtionaly i didn't take one with me home, but if I have som sparetime before I live for mumbai I will pick one up and write everything down here. Can't promise anything though, I am very busy now when only 4 days remain before I leave
