Havelock on Christimas and New Year? Fully booked?

Dear India friends, my girlfriend and I will stay on Andaman Islands from 22.12.2007 till 05.01.2008.
We've heard, that all lodges, hotels and resorts are fully booked in this period (peak season). We only received quite expensive offers (for example: Bayview Inn, Non AC, 36 US Dollar per night; Hotel in Port Blair for nearly 50 US Dollar per night).
Is it really necessery to book accomodation in advance for Christmas and New Year???
Thanks for any help and your experiences, Flamingo24

Hi Guys

I was on Havelock last year, arrived on New Years Day. I booked a beach hut at Pristine Beach Resort, a place I had stayed at before. Yes Havelock was pretty full and there were some disappointed people who slept in hammocks or on the cushions in the restaurant. It is fairly basic, simple huts were 400, bigger huts with private bathroom 700 and an amazing 2 storey deluxe lurve nest for 1500. The owner is very friendly, honest and helpful. The restaurant is also good for the price and it sells beer - not many places do. alexpristinebeach@hotmail.com
There are several other budget places at similar prices and a few more upmarket choices as well. You can check out Vinnies place, especially if you also want to go diving. http://islandvinnie.com/accommodation.html
As for Port Blair, it is more difficult. If you fly in to Port Blair you should be able to catch a boat to Havelock at about 4pm same day. Hotels in Port Blair will be crowded - and I can't think of one to suggest.

true or false? or, to go or not to go?
I was speaking on the telephone this week (sept 26th) to the Andaman tourist office in Port Blair, and there was no mention of a tourist rush or all places being already booked,in fact in some places they won´t accept "bookings"...If you are worried about not being able to find accomodation, then taking a small tent might be a good idea,or a hammock with attached mossie net(search web) .Personally i want to give Havelock a very wide berth, some of what i have seen looks a bit like stockbroker territory and ahm jerst a paw farm boy.so ahm gonna mowsie aroun an fahnd me a li`l cowner an playy me serm geetar.
Happy travels, Martinez

I wish Pristine's website worked better (most of the links don't work). I so wanted to book a two-story acco at Havelock, but our first choice (Emerald Gecko) ran out of them when I actually got down to booking, instead we had to book a large hut (bungalow, they call it). If only there was some way of knowing more about Pristine, this could have been an option too!!!...Anyways...*sigh*

You can always get some kind of accomodation in havelock as there is not party scene in havelock like in goa. So it is usually real quiet in the evenings. But new years will be tight.

i stayed at a newish resort at beach 2 on havelock, called sea shells resort. i just checked and they are on the net. the rooms are lovely and modern, surrounded by tall coconut trees and a view of the beach where the snorkelling is good. 1,200rps-1,800 per night. no air conditioning but with the trees there is plenty of shade. the food service was not up to scratch but they didn't have many people staying, i was the only one there 3 out of 5 nights, so i think it was because they were not stocked up. good service and friendly, though.
