Getting to Andaman from Sri Lanka

Hi, after doing some travelling in india I have to go to Sri Lanka to meet a friend but have my heart set on going to Andaman Islands. Does anyone know if there are boats between Sri Lanka and Andamans or will I have to travel back to East India? Would be so helpful to find out! Thanks a lot.

as far as i know there is no shipconection between sri lanca and india at all. i have been searching about the andamans for the last few days but didn't come across any ship going to sl.

Hi there, thanks for the reply. I think I will look for any independent boats going to Andaman from SLanka and failing that will fly back to India and get a boat from east coast to Andaman ISlands. There are definitely boats that go there - Chennai and Calcutta. Have a good trip, Jayne

my information is not fresh (as of October 2003) but a friend of mine was looking for a boat to go from Sri Lanka to India and eventually had to take a flight Colombo-Chennai as we were told that there were no "official" sea connection between the two countries at that time. Only illegal fishing boats were circulating between Northern SL - Jaffna (which may be closed for foreigners because of the civil uprising there - it is under Tamil troops' rule) and South India.

If you end up in Jaffna take note that the peace btw Tamil Tigers and the government of Sri Lanka is currently put on hold (in fact, the peace process was in a better shape in October 2003).
