Can someone help me out reading the Shipping Schedule?

This one is confusing me - http://www.and.nic.in/spsch/sailing.htm

See attached image. For example the first row, I am reading it as It Arrives in chennai on 19.02.09 and departs FOR Port Blair on 22.02.09

i don't think my brain is working today, can anyone solve this mystery?

Thanks.

I think you've got it. Then it takes 3 days to get to Port Blair, stays there 3 days (presumably to load and unload) and returns to Chennai on the 28th.

capt_mahajan could probably confirm.

Just to double-check, based on the page I gave above, there is a ferry from Kolkata - Port Blair on 10.03.2009 arriving in PB on 14.03.09

Does anyone know if you need to book these ships way in advance, or whether I can book over the telephone or through a travel agent (I arrive on 03.03.09) ?

The only details I have is:

AT CALCUTTA

The tickets for all the passenger vessels are issued by SCI, Ltd., from their office situated at 13, Strand Road, Calcutta-17. We will aim to establish a transist accommodation for passengers by the year 2001.

Which obviously could be out of date.

Appreciated.

Yes, it stays 3 days, as per the scedule. These ships get only one way traffic, so all the passengers will normally disembark at either PB or Calcutta and new ones join at time of departure.

Booking at a weeks notice should be fine. If very particular about the kind of accomodation, you can book in advance. Will need a travel agent- don't know if you can do this online.

Don't expect the QE2

Dwardoo, you might check out the website of the Shipping Corporation of India. Here is a section about Port Blair. If you click on the document mentioned at the bottom of the page in the following link you will find a schedule for May. Note that it says "tentative". If you go back to their Home page there are some useful telephone numbers. Good luck. I also am inclined to agree with Steven Ber (from another thread today) that you will not find any boats in the monsoon weather. But why not telephone them? Also, in another link I read that boat schedules are published in the newspaper only one week before departure. In other words, you need to hang around a while in order to find your boat. In any event it takes sixty hours from Kolkata to Port Blair.
