Try to see the Taj from Mehtab Bagh (across the river) in the evening.
Kedar Janani Devasthan, Mt Abu - Udaipur, Bharatpur, Agra, Gwalior, Orchha, Jhansi

a nice place to see the Taj in the evening is a rooftop restaurant, you can enjoy the view together with good food and a cool bottle of fruit juice.

There is a viewing spot on the way to the Taj, specifically for people who turn up when it is closed, or who cannot / will not pay the entrance fee. Any guide should be able to take you there.

If you want a glimpse or rather view of the Tajmahal on a Friday when it is closed, stay at the Oberoi Amarvilas hotel and get a room with a balcony ( they have rooms with and without balconies and the ones with a balcony carry a moderate premium on the rates).
You can get a spectacular view of the Taj from the balcony from a distance.
As for the hotel itself, it is a classy hotel and must stay if you got the money to splurge a little ( rooms last I know run about %24550-600/nt for the balcony rooms if you get one of their ongoing deals. More if you want to pay full rack rates).

You can sip a glass of whatever suits your whim and sit in the balcony and enjoy Tajmahal in all its gloty from Amarvilas and its much better on one of the nights closer to fullmoon days.

It is 550 to 600 USD per night not the gibberish that shows up there.
