Taj Mahal opening times
Can anyone help with the opening times for the Taj Mahal?

I would like to go visit the Taj Mahal on a Friday (as it's the only free day I have in Delhi).

I've had different information about the opening times.

This site says it's closed on Mondays:

Whereas this site says it closed on Fridays:

Also, Is it still worth taking a day trip to Agra even if the Taj is closed - are there other temples to see? I'm thinking I'll get the train over there and back so wondering if there'll be enough to do with 12 hours there???

Thanks in advance.

hey hi, agra is only worth visiting for the taj, agta its self is a sh*t pit in my opinion (hope that doesn't offend to many people) the taj opens early in the morning, probablly sunrise to sunset opening times, i must stress that you get there as early as possible, there are less people about so you can wander around with out been bothered for pictures or anything else. hope that helps

john - sitting on the beach in kovalam.

[edit] most sites in india seem to close on a monday, found that out to my cost in mumbai, one day there and elephanta island was closed :(

The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors on Fridays. Agra Fort is open though and so is Fatehpur Sikri, which is 37 km west of Agra.

You could take a taxi or bus to Fatehpur Sikri and back.

Details of these places are on the official site of the Archaeological Survey of India

You sound like a solo female traveller so I thought I should post this recent piece from Maree on this forum who is a very experienced traveller.

"Went out to Fatehpur Sikri yesterday and had so many people wanting to be my guide... or sometimes not my "guide" but they just wanted to walk around and talk with me and didn't want money... yeah, right!! When you get about twenty guys all with that line it's not hard to see through. The problem is is that a polite no won't work with them and some of them get quite rude and abusive. It wasn't a very relaxing trip. The other disturbing thing on the way out there are the captive bears which are made to dance as cars go by in the hope of some rupees... sick."

You might like to take a couple of friends along if you decide to go. We are a middle aged couple and also found the touting very persistent outside the area controlled by the Archaeological Survey of India at Fatehpur Sikri.

Thanks for the advice. think I'll spend Friday in Delhi then - anyone any ideas for decent things to do there?

I'm arriving in Delhi on Thursday 5th around midday and leaving on Sunday 8th. I am meeting a friend from India on Saturday. He works during the week so I'm wondering what to do on thursday afternoon and Friday during the day.

Is anyone else in Delhi and looking to do some sightseeing on these days?

I'm female and travelling alone and not sure how safe it is to get my own driver to take me to the sights.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Namaste India Tours on this site does a Delhi day sightseeing tour which has been recommended by others including Maree. Details are on their website

Hi Joanne, before you totally give up on your day trip, IMHO both the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are superior to the Taj and definitely worth the trip. They were both in my TOP TEN when I went to Rajasthan a few years ago. The tourists in the Agra Fort were mostly young Indians and a lot of fun, and there were few tour buses and loud guides. And also the view of the Taj from the Agra Fort is superb, a little far, but mysteriously rising above the water, a jewel.

The scene outside the Agra Fort, though, was close to the worst I have experienced in India, for aggressive salesmen and touts, but not for aggression to females. So add that to the problems Alan mentions, and you might indeed consider looking for a companion to go with. That's easy to find, including Indian families on holidays, if you are outgoing. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Anyone in Delhi on Friday 6th Feb?
Now I'm really not sure what to do

I have looked into doing a day tour of Delhi with Namaste tours instead.

My problem is I arrive in delhi on Thursday 5th Feb (middayish) and fly out on Sunday 8th so I only have 2 free days.

I have a work colleague in Delhi who I will be spending the day with on Saturday which is why Friday is my only free day to visit the Taj.

I'm quite happy to go on the train but am now unsure as to whether I'll feel safe going on my own or whether I'd be better off just doing some sightseeing in Delhi. I also need to book with Namaste for the Delhi tour in advance so I need to make a decision quite soon.

Does anyone know whether I'd be able to get Train tickets to Agra one day in advance when I arrive in Delhi on Thursday 5th?

Also, is anyone about in Delhi on Friday 6th who fancies a trip over to Agra, or just to meet up for they day in Delhi maybe?
