Question Leading Delegation to Agra - need suggestions

Hi everyone,

I am new to this site an very thankful for it. I am leading a delegation of senior administrators to Agra from New Delhi by hotel arranged car. Can anyone give me suggestions on where to stop for lunch in Agra? Also, are there any markets near the Taj that I can take the senior female administraor to? She likes to eat and shop "native" while in another country. Any suggestions would be most welcomed.

The minute you stop and open the car door, you will be surrounded with touts, each of which wants you to visit "his" shop.

I, personally, avoided shopping in Agra; the pressure is too hard.

A delegation?

You will get a delegation of touts

Keep in mind that, in all probability and on an average, the stuff from the 'native' shop in Agra will be at least twice the cost of a State Government run outlet in Delhi. And the Delhi place will have fixed prices.

Besides the headache of the hassle and the waste of time, of course, at Agra

My suggestion: keep the Agra trip for sightseeing. Shop in Delhi.

I couldn't agree more with the Captain here! In Delhi there are is a good State Emporium in Janpath, easy to access. Another good place to shop and also with food from around the states is Dilli Haat, this one would be very nice to take a delegation.

Concentrate on the sights - if you have time, go to Fatehpur Sikri as well. Take a look at the existing threads in this Agra Forum for restaurants. There are a few suggestions here already.

you can try agra silkroute a for lunch.here is their site http://www.agra-silk-route-restaurant.com/ .talk to ali or his wife they will/might help you in choosing good shops.ali is really a nice gentleman(talking from my personal experience).you can find thier contact number in thier site.if you get ali's number message me in forum i will provide you.

Also be aware of touts.for preventing them, you can arrange your travel needs with ali( from pick up from agra station to drop at agra station).he runs a travel agency and will be glad to help you.

For Lunch try the following places -

Mughal Sheraton, The Gateway ( around $ 20.00 per person w/o drinks ).

Amar Hotel ( Near Pizza Hut ) - around $ 10.00 per person w/o drinks.

Drinks here will cost around $ 4.00 for a Beer.

As far as shopping goes - Go to Sadar Makerket for light shopping of traditional stuff. Not many touts there. Near the Taj it is quite horrible.

Shopping - Delhi is the best.

Hope the above helps.
