Is Fatehpur Sikri worth the trip

I have just read a trip report where the poster said that the Fatehpur Sikri visit isn't worth the trip as the Red fort is very similar and if she had to do the same again she would skip it.

We were planning on doing the Agra - Jaipur part of our trip with a driver because we wanted to stop off at Fatehpur Sikri on the way. We would actually prefer to do the trip by train so I'm wondering if it's really worth the visit.

We arrive in Agra from Varanasi at 6.15.am and we're staying the night in Agra. I suppose we could do Fatepur Sikr, The Red Fort and the Taj all on that day then take the train instead of a car the next day to Jaipur , or would this be too hectic?

Can anyone give me some advice on this.

Fatehpur Sikri is certainly worth a visit. Prefer it to the Taj (which should be seen once, I guess)

Thumbs up

Just shows how different people see things. I think Fatipur Sikri is one of the most unique and special places to visit and would strongly advise seeing it. It may be "red brick" like the Red Fort, but it's nothing at all like it!

I've been there 3 times --on every Agra Taj Mahal visit -- and would go again.

I think you can get a combo ticket with the entrance fee to the Taj Mahal. But I may be confused. The combo ticket may be for the Red Fort & the Taj. The Red Fort is also amazing.

In any case, see all three! You might find doing all three in one day a bit too much. We always spend a night or two in Agra so we can enjoy the sights. Agra is a pretty horrible city but it does have some wonderous sights!

We visited the Red Fort and Fatehpur Sikri and like it both. But the buildings are in the same style and back home it was difficult to know where we made the pictures of the buildings.

When you are in Agra try to make time to visit Itmad-Ud-Daulah or the Baby Taj. It is situated on the other side of the Jamuna and very intriguing.

Far better than the Red Fort and vastly more atmospheric (other than the touts outside). A lot depends on the person making the observation. If the person's idea of history is when was their last facebook entry then its just a pile of rocks..

They were both built by Akbar in the 16th century! Yes, same style. Nothing like the Fort, however!

Fatehpur Sikri is stunning.

Don't be put off by reading all the stuff about touts and stuff, just go ther and enjoy it.

I was tired by the time I got there and it was 40 degrees but the beauty of the place held my focus enough. We'd already seen the Taj Mahal and Sikandra that day but this place ended an already special day brilliantly.

When you go do just bear in mind that you do not need to buy anything you don't want to. With that thought firmly placed, you'll be able to thoroughly enjoy Fatehpur Sikri.

FS appears in a million films but watch The Fall before you go.

If you're staying overnight in Agra anyway I'd go and see Sikandra, Itmad-au-Daulah and the Agra Fort on day one, sunrise at the Taj and off to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri.
Or how about Taj, Fatehpur Sikri and a cycle/stroll around Keoladeo in the late afternoon before a night in Bharatpur.

Is Fatepur Sikri worth the trip ?

Yes, absolutely. It is a wonderful place and definitely worth visiting. There is the tomb of Salim Chisti, a muslim Saint, where you are supposed to tie a thread on a window screen and then your wish will come true! I did that almost 30 years ago, and it worked!
This time, when I visited there this last April,we had taken one of the guides there and he took us to a place where we were supposed to give a donation to a foundation to buy clothes for poor people, and there they insisted we had to make a donation before going to the tomb . We refused though and gave only a small fee, to get a string and a piece of cloth and flowers, and a string to tie on the window. If you enter the tomb they make you throw flowers on the cloth you donate, and then you are allowed to tie your string. Hope it will work this time as well !

When we were there we were the only Westerners there, and it was so beautiful and peaceful, I loved that place.
Try to see the Fort AND Fatepur if you have enough time.
enjoy,
Paratmoshe

It is definetely worth a visit BUT not in this hot weather. It can be enjoyed to its max if the weather is good ( August - March ) April, May , June & July is a strict no no as its 35 - 50 deg cel most of the time

Red Fort is good too.

All 3 monuments not possible in a day until you have yr own rented car.

In my life I've never experience temperatures so hot but 40 deg celsius is fine for strolling around a monument for a couple/few hours.

If you mean Agra Fort and Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri I would agree. The three (Taj Mahal, Sikandra, Fatehpur sikri) we did meant it was a long (but well worth it) day. I wouldn't have wanted to replace Sikandra with the Agra Fort, all in one day, much better to do the fort another day.

Thanks everyone, we will keep to the original plan of hiring a car to go to Jaipur and stop off at Fatehpur Sikri on the way.

Fatehpur Sokri--Waoh!
If you could find time then certainly don't miss it. What a loction for the monumental fort! Enjoy the shear planning and the mixture of the cultures of three different religions. The birth place of Din-ilahi- sincere effort of Akbar to creat a new religion. Don't forget such a beautiful place is abandoned because of scarcity of water! such a exqusite fort could not be used for more that four years!!! There is no such building on earth with such historical significance. Don't miss it.

Who can recommend a good hotel in Fatehpur Sikri? We want budget, but running water and a/c. Also, I've heard the Sikri market is not to be missed. Does anyone know of a guide out that way? Thanks!
