Question Hotel in Agra

Hi! I'm looking for a hotel in Agra - cheap or expensive - what I'm really after is it has to be as close as possible to the Taj. I tried to book Hotel Kamal but it's full for the one night we'll be in Agra.

We arrive at 1am and we like to get up and watch dawn on the streets - watch a city/town wake up - we want dawn pictures of the Taj so first priority is location.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Anacri

You can try the Mughal (it's part of the Starwood chain):

The Mughal, Agra
Taj Ganj
Agra, Uttar Pradesh IN 282001
(91)(562) 4021700

On Google maps it looks like it's less than 2 miles away from the Taj Mahal.
Cheers,
David

The Sheela is about as close as you can get. Easy walking distance and now has some AC rooms. Its in the book..

Thanks! I called Sheela and made a reservation... at least I hope the guy that answered the phone understood what I wanted! I'm not so sure he understood the part about us showing up in the middle of the night...

I always stay at

the Shanti Lodge. From the fourth floor restaurant you look almost straight into the main entry to the Taj, maybe one Km away. I've gotten some great night time photographs from there.

I appreciate the answers on this thread, as I was about to ask the same! I really want to stay near the Taj if I can, even though it will just be for one night. Hotel Sheela sounds interesting and a bit quirky from what I've read? The only problem is, I'll be going in July, so I'm afraid I'll want A/C...did I read somewhere that they do have some A/C rooms now, or is that the Sheela Inn?

Look at the lodging section of the lonely planet guidebook. I think it is Hotel Sheela. The AC rooms are more 900 or so compared to perhaps as low as 450 otherwise. Well worth it in July!!

The Oberoi Amarvillas is close - photo in my album shows the view of the Taj from the room. Not cheap - but worth it.

I think the Hindi for 'middle of the night' is 'madhya raatri', [MAAdhya RAAtree] if that would help?

Hotel Amar, I highly recommend. Clean, safe and noticed a lot of other tourists.
