Does 2 out of 3 work for you?

In India it's a normal and everyday experience to have castrated men, in saris, badly in need of a shave, showing up to dance and sing at weddings and homes where children are newly born. So it is in my humble estimation, absurd to fret about whether it's acceptable to wear shorts while visiting a monument.

Take your pick!
Well maybe not, I'm sure Mrs. AFH would be a trifle miffed.

Ah - the famous ' Shorts ' debate !!

Ok - here's my 2 cents - having spent half my life in India and the other half touring the world, I have seen all kinds and all sorts of views.

My suggestion - You can wear shorts which are decent and by decent I mean not Hot Pants or clinging shorts showing yr rear side in all its glory.

No one will object to your wearing shorts but be prepared to get all sorts of views and lewd remarks from our so called Indian Males and touts.

If I were you I'd wear A pair of Jeans or cargos or if it is shorts then something that reaches the knees rather than half way up

If it's Goa you could do anything but in Agra, do think twice as the views you would get would not be so pleasant.

The one thing that I advise everyone not to wear is Short Skirts in India as they really attract unwanted attention.

So there you go, you know now what to do ! The above may sound stupid but it is my personal view.
