Call me old fashion but out of respect save the shorts for the beach or the pool.

Okay - you're old fashioned! Seriously - Sadhus walk around in nothing but a langoti and nobody gets bent of out of shape - why should anyone object to shorts? The Taj for all its majesty - is just an inert collection of rocks and incapable of being offended. Moreover, it's no more holy than Rockefeller Center, Buckingham Palace or Disneyland.

Oh goodness did I miss something, is Wayneo a Sadhu? As a guest in someone else's home or country I try to behave and dress appropriately. When in Rome do as the Romans do. There have been countless articles on IndiaMike about the traditional and somewhat conservative culture of India. The Taj is part of that history and culture. Unless he is talking about the Taj Hotel, you and I can discuss this point at the New York meetup on Sunday.

You can't wear your shoes on the monument itself. I think it's more to protect the marble than any show of respect. They do provide shoe covers if you don't want to take your shoes off.

All I am saying is that if a sadhu can walk around in a glorified jockstrap - then why should anyone be offended by the wearing of shorts? I have seen Indian men (hundreds over the years) with their lunghis folded up higher than their knees. In India you can always find someone who, given an opportunity - will be willing to exploit some imagined outrage over some inane corruption of some 3000 yr. old Indian dress code, in order to be perceived as the possessor of some moral or cultural high-ground. But Indians wear shorts - tho not often. I've seen Indian girls in skin-tight jeans and mini-skirts at the Taj (been there three times) and I don't see any reason why westerners need to be walking around on eggs trying to be even more conservative than Indians themselves.

Now if you're asking whether it's okay to wear tube-tops, well that's something we can devote a whole thread to.

Oh, the great shorts controversy!

Nobody will be offended by a man wearing shorts!

Well, they might if they were of the lycra kind that cyclists wear!

The best answer I have come across to this was a member posting that Indian men associate shorts with school, and that adults wear long trousers and feel a bit silly in shorts. That is a personal-image issue and has nothing whatsoever to do with any sort of respect or public decency thing.

You want to wear shorts? Wear shorts. People will not be scandalised by the sight of a pair of male knees.

India is a big place. There is bound to be somewhere where what I just said is 100% wrong! But, so far as cities go, I speak as a resident of the one which is often said to be the most conservative.

No one will be scandalized - true.

Is it normal for an Indian to wear shorts to the Taj - NO!

Is it ok for a westerner to wear shorts in Cannought Place - why not?

At the Taj - why not? Although, if I were a westerner, I wouldn't. But that's just personal choice and sensibilities coming into play.

The question was about shorts, not shoes.

As long as his knees are nicely shaped and he shaves beforehand... I, for one, do not wish to see whitish or reddish hairy knees in a public place!
