Delhi - Agra - Jaipur

This will be my first trip to India (although my wife visited Goa in the 1970's and we toured Sri Lanka four years ago).

We plan to fly in to New Delhi from London, then spend a week in Manali, Himchal Pradesh first, returning to New Delhi on 26/10/09.

From there, we will travelling to Agra from New Delhi on 27/10/09 (our wedding anniversary) by Shatabdi Express and see the Taj Mahal.

We then want to see Jaipur and are spending our final week in Goa. However we will probably fly back to the UK from Delhi (there is a reason for this seemingly strange behaviour).

But we need some advice: what is the best method to travel from Agra to Jaipur to New Delhi (Train/flight/road). And how much time should we allow in each city?

Any constructive advice will be gratefully received.

By the way, this will probably not be our last trip to India lest it seem we are "two week tourists".

Train No 4853 MARUDHAR EXPRESS is a convenient train between Agra and Jaipur. It departs from Agra AF at 06.15 in the morning to reach Jaipur JP at 11.30, with a total journey time of 05.15 hours.

If you want to start at evening, then you may opt for 2965 Gwalior-Udaipur Express it start from Agra at 5:40 PM and reaches Jaipur at 10:20 PM. It saves you day time.

I would suggest that you go to Agra via road and rent a car for the full journey as there is no flight or train between Agra and Jaipur you would like to visit Fatehpur Sikri on route from Agra to Jaipur only possible while driving. Also you will save money renting taxis for local sightseeing as the car you will rent could be used for the same. You could fly to Kulu which is 60Kms from Manali and then drive up. You could drive up but it is a long drive and would not suggest it in a single day.

Nothing

Usually this does not happen, particularly at the starting station. Bur If it happens, nothing can be done about it....

That's how India is.......

Many thanks for your input. I'm not sure about driving in India - how safe is it generally?. Have already decided to fly from Delhi to Kulu already.

Hi SheppeyMan

I was an eleven-day tourist [deep sigh] a year ago, and went Delhi - Varanasi - Delhi (wedding) - Agra - Jaipur - Delhi - UK. From Delhi to Agra, then Jaipur, I was with a couple of friends, and we went in a car (a beast of a thing) they had hired through a tour company.

Not everyone's cup of tea, and I probably wouldn't do it again (unless equally rushed), but it had other advantages - chief being that it gave us the time and ease to relax a bit, not worry about timings, enjoy each other's company (no shortage of things to say!), and, of course, to watch the endlessly changing world we passed through.

My friends (60-somethings) arrived in India a bit after I did, just a couple of days before this trip, so were feeling the shock a little. Each day, our driver suggested a timetable for the following day ... each day, from hour one, we totally abused it! - which we couldn't have done if we'd been travelling by train. It made the world of difference to our short trip.

Just a word in favour of some "luxury" - if you can arrange it!

Oh, and how much time in each city?

Personally, I would only comment, allow at least couple of nights in Agra - there's so much to see. And I for one really enjoyed Fatehpur Sikri, and like Rajat would recommend a visit there. If you haven't already looked throught the Agra forum, there's a thread here which discusses some of the ins and outs of the area)

There are trains from Agra Fort to Jaipur, and there are also trains from Agra Fort to Fatehpur Sikri, though this isn't on the AF-Jaipur route.

There is a 'passenger' train (Bayana Passenger) that departs Agra Fort daily at 14:00 and gets to Fathepur Sikri at 15:02, this train has 2nd class unreserved only, so doesn't need to be booked ahead.

The Jaipur trains call at Bharatpur and Fathepur Sikri (FS) is only 25kms from Bharatpur, so if you're visiting FS, train 2965 (Bharatpur 19.15, Jaipur 22.20) would be a great option, and would save time by not having to go back to Agra.

But using trains/buses to go Agra-FS-Bharatpur would give you the problem of what to do with your luggage whilst visiting FS, I don't know if there is a cloak room (to store luggage) at FS railway station (if there isn't, the booking office can be used to look after luggage), a taxi to take you to FS, then wait, and take you to Bharatpur would be expensive as you have to pay for the return journey back to Agra, but it's an option.
