The train is just so much more relaxing. No hurry, curry, worry or traffic - just sit back, have a cup of chai (or snort of Old Monk) & drink in the beauty of the Indian countryside as it whizzes by your window.

You'll be there before you know it & you'll be none the worse for the wear as there are far fewer potholes along Indian railways.

Hello guys, congratulations to the staff of this forum, absolutely amazing and the best about India.

I have read this thread about the connection between Delhi and Agra. So, ok for the train... But is it so easy to go to the station, find the correct platform, find the correct train and so on? If the express departs in Delhi at 6.15, what time a "nerd" like me should be in front of the station to make things right without stress? And what about the same question for the station of Agra when coming back to Delhi?
What about the food served on board the Shatabdi express? Is it edible or is it more reasonable to refuse it?

Last question: I have heard rumours about a new road between Delhi and Agra that should make the connection faster. Do you know something more?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Welcome to IndiaMike. if you are catching the Bhopal Shatabdi you should plan to arrive at NDLS station no later than 5.45 to allow for security checks on the way in. The train departs from platform 1 which is on the Paharganj side of the station. If you arrive at the Ajmer Gate side allow yourself extra time to get across the station.

The food is OK. You get a choice of Veg or non-Veg. For the return trip get to the station half an hour before departure of the train to be on the safe side.

Don't even think about trying to do a return trip by road in a day.

Can you keep a secret? We staffers don't even get minimum wage.

Hi All

Planning a day trip to Agra in September. I've researched into trains and understand long haul journeys get booked up fast however, will I be okay to book Delhi-Agra a day before? Or is it best to still book in advance? Travelling solo and female.

Many thanks

Laura

If you are already in Delhi you should be able to get Foreign Tourist Quota tickets at the International Bureau at NDLS station without any difficulty,

Laura,

Welcome to IM! I guess if you are planning to book a ticket for Agra then you should book a ticket in advance as it will help you but as suggested by Dave, you could use your Foreign National Quota on NDLS when you arrive Delhi

Coming from Varanasi to Agra, Jan. 27 --> Jan. 28 arrival. Do I want to book tickets to Agra Fort (IDH) and Idgah Agra Junction (AF)? What's the difference between these two places?

Book to either Agra Fort (AF) or to Agra Cantt (AGC). To my limited knowledge any train which stops at Idgah (IDH) stops at Agra Fort first. Also, at Agra Fort you'll often have 20 minutes to get off the train - at IDH you have 1 minute, sometimes 2.

You'll find the stations on Google Maps.

Be aware of where your train departs from - many trains from Varanasi depart from Mughal Sarai Jn - which is about 45 minutes from the middle of Varanasi.
Gone.

Train from Varanasi , you are probably coming from Marudhar Express ...get down at Agra Fort .. Idgah Agra is just the next station , but rather small ... It is advisable to get down at Agra Fort (or Agra Cantt) but your train probably does not go to Agra Cantt.

Moreover, the touristy places like Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and others are in the region of Agra Fort with a lot of hotels nearby
....life is a journey.....and the journey is more important than the destination........

Agra Fort would be your first choice but if the tickets are waitlisted it is worth having a look to see if there is availability to IDH which is in a different quota.

If you have a problem with tickets for this train there is a pretty generous Foreign Tourist Quota for westbound trips. None at all for eastbound.
