Hi All,

I'm a new member and once again greet everyone reading this post.

I'm back in India from london after close to 3 and a half years on a break, and absolutely new to this forum, please do correct me or pardon if any information seeked here has already been answered previously.

We(Me, My Partner & a friend) are planning a day trip from Delhi to Agra. I've gone through all five pages here and absorbed a lot of useful information. Few things remain unanswered. Let me share some details about our plan first and then move with my queries.

We've already booked return tickets on New Delhi Bhopal Shatabdi(Train Number 2002-2001) for 8th July 2010 (Thursday) from New Delhi Railway Station to Agra Cantt as everyone here suggested. Duration in Agra ( 8:30 am- 8:00 pm)

With a priority to enjoy and not hurry through, I mean we'd prefer to go to few places but do them properly rather than be on run and enjoy nothing, Please suggest:

  • Travel order/possible combination to cover Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daulah, Fatehpur sikri ( please add or delete given above)
  • If Fatehpur Sikri is included wouldnt it be better to go with a full day cab deal ??
  • I understand that its ideal to enjoy taj at sunrise and sunset, in case you suggest we do it first thing would it be advisable to come back in evening for a look ??
  • Is it possible to take one guide for all the above, e.g. full day kinds ??
  • ATM & restraunts en route to the above.
  • Leaving the train tickets, would 3000 be enough for us ??
  • Finally I'm planning this on 8th because exactly 13 yrs ago as a kid I proposed my partner, So anything else which might add a spark would be wonderfull ...!!!

Thanks to all who could help and to everyone who might find this post usefull.

Cheers ...!!!!

UP govt has tourist buses to cover all historic points of agra and fatehpur sikri. moment train reahes station buses are stationed just outside platform.Guides and ticket agents for these buses are available inside running train coming from delhi. i went on taj express and not a minute was wasted in booking and boarding tourist buses, taxis must aslo be available.Govt buses are safe and run as package for day starting and terminating at agra cantt station. For lunch they stop at some motel while comming back from fatehpur sikri ( 40 km one way)

From Delhi visited Agra. Took Bhopal Shatabdi A/C Chair car (Rs 370)at 6:15 am. Very convenient, Breakfast and tea are served. At Agra took pre-paid taxi for day ie. Shatabdi to Shatabdi Rs 1350. Visited Agra fort, Fatehpur Sikri, some handloom shops and Taj. Was dropped at Agra Cantt station at 8:15pm for return journey by Bhopal Shatabdi. Dinner is served in train, reached Delhi 10:30pm. You can schedule the tour of Agra as per your choice. Let them know what places you want to visit within the time slot from 8:30am to 8:15pm.Guide will also be there for entire tour, rs 350.
If you want to buy anything always bargain, start atleast at half of what they quote. If you think you have a price based on the product stick to it.If it does not click, you will not lose anything. If seller starts climbing down stick to your price, if you are uncomfortable walk out. If you do not intend to buy, do not talk about the price , tell them you just want to see or do not visit the shops. Guide may not help with price, since they would be getting some money for bringing in customers.
Enjoy the beauty of Taj and Agra fort is worth looking, do not miss it.

It is a twelve hour day with the taxi too, and I believe most taxi places would factor that in too - this prepaid arrangement is I guess a set price?

For travel within Delhi. From Domestic airport to Karol Bagh, Pre-paid taxi cost us Rs 275, whereas if hotel had to send they would charge upwards of Rs700.Although taxi says A/C, they never work, you may have to bear the weather hot or cold. And for travel from Karol Bagh to Int' Airport charged Rs 450 at night 10:00pm, if thru hotel upwards of Rs700.From Karol Bagh to New Delhi Rly Station Rs250. From Station to Karol Bagh Rs 200. For local travel 1/2 day Rs 500 A/C working. And for full day, traveled to, Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple, Akshardham, Raj Ghat, Red Fort- it would take entire day, I as charged Rs1170 for 117 kms. This was from hotel guy, he had some one working for him. You plan your trips or places you want to visit and bargain.
Hopefully this information helps.

Car Service Agra

Can you recommend a car service company in Agra? I would like to book a car for a day trip in Agra, to cover the following: Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daulah, Fatehpur sikri.
Thanks.

I feel so stupid replying so late. But for the future traveler on a budget, I would most enthusiastically recommend taking the UP Government's tourist buses for a day tour. They depart right from the car-park of the Cantonment station, right after the trains from Delhi arrive (Shatabdi/Taj) and come back in time for the returning train to Delhi. You can book a place from the Tourist office in the station (in fact on the same platform where the train stops), and just hop on.
Their schedule covers all the sites a daylong traveler can possibly cover, and everywhere the government guides make sure no hanger-ons bother you.
Is it the best option? I cant say that, but given the mob of touts and dubious agents outside, I would not take a chance. And I did not have the money to splurge on hired private cars, so nothing but a shared coach would suit me.
