Cell Phones at the Taj Mahal

I visited the Taj Mahal around mid March and I can report that they allow you to carry your cell phone inside in the switch off mode. And then many people switch it on when inside. Wonder what brought this change. I also wonder if this has been discussed before?

We were there in the Autumn and the signs at that time said "Cellphones must be switched off" even though our driver and the guide had both told us they must be left in our car.

I'm guessing that they finally figured out that mobiles really aren't as much of a nuisance or threat as they'd originally thought, and that so many people carry them, many of who arrive by bus or taxi and would have nowhere safe to store their phone, it was just easier to allow them to be brought in.

Haylo but it was a little weird to see people talking on their cell phones inside the Taj Mahal, a sight I was unused to.

In my view, mobile phones are the ultimate nuisance! But I suppose I'm about the only one who thinks so.

Very much no.

I remember how the end of our visit to Bhimbetka was spoiled when the peace of that quiet, ancient ridgetop was corrupted by some jackass braying into his cellphone, jabbering inanities at some friend in Bhopal. Hell, he was so loud he didn't need a cellphone to reach Bhopal.

My wife and I are always delighted and amazed on Japan Rail trains to watch what happens when someone's cellphone rings. He silences it instantly, stands, bows shamefacedly to his seatmates and those nearby, then hurries to the landing between cars where cellphone conversations are permitted. (We're losing the battle, though – we've seen people on some of the private rail lines yakking on their phones just like Americans, and we once saw a man on Japan Rail answer immediately and walk the length of the car talking loudly into his phone on the way to the landing.)

Perhaps my least favorite memory, though, is of the guy at the next urinal in a Newark airport mens' room conducting high-powered financial dealings on his phone while simultaneously occupied with the matter at hand. Jeez, guys, I have a bashful bladder already without all of Wall Street watching.

I must add that at the moment though people use their cell phones in corners away from where they can be easily noticed, yet I must say I too liked the Taj without the cell phones more.

Me too, I did not see a single person using their phone during my visit to the Taj Mahal.

Far from it, I think they can be a real pain, and I'm sure most people would agree. However, I don't think they pose a nuisance if they are switched off, I was not suggesting people be allowed to use them inside the TM complex.

I just think that for the many people who have to carry mobiles, often for work related purposes, their phones not being allowed into the TM complex would be a problem, because there is nowhere secure for anyone to leave valuables outside the complex during their visit.

No No ! My vote is with you !

Loud Talking on mobiles is so irritating that sometimes I feel like snatching and throeing away the mobile......

Sadly mobile has become like a body part for us Indians.....

In a recent survey more than 90% people listed mobile as one of the top 5 things that they would like to take out in case of fire in their home.....

If you want to take a cellphone into the Taj it has to be white.

Hal But no such thing! But let me repeat only a very small number of people were using text or talking on the phones inside the premises.

Awesome thanks!

Also, I am planning on proposing to my gf by the Taj, will I have any problems getting the ring and box through security without my gf noticing or without the security giving me hassle?

No problem with your girlfriend noticing, women have a separate queue and security searches.

Cannot imagine why they would have a problem with you bringing a ring in, it's hardly a security risk!
