My wife and I would like to visit Agra, probably staying over night as a one day visit sounds like a bit of an ordeal. A complication is that my wife tires of sightseeing long before I do and often needs to retreat to the hotel while I see other sights.
The idea of hiring a car (air comditioned) with a driver seems appealing as it should allow some flexiblity. For example we could travel from Delhi to Agra in the morning (a 4 hour trip I believe) and see the Taj. My wife could then check into the hotel if she has had enough and I could go on to the Fort. On day 2 we are thinking of a late checkout so that I could visit Fatehpur Sikri first thing and pick my wife up from the hotel about midday and head back to Delhi. Why is my wife coming and missing most of the sights? She really wants to see the Taj Mahal. It does sound like Agra could be a place where you need somewhare to retreat to if you get tired easily though. One last thing, the tour agent that I am communicating with at the moment is Caretaker Tours (http://www.caretakertours.com). Has anyone had any experience with them? Are there any other suggestions? They are proposing ti charge USD$95 per day (USD $190 total) including accomodation at the Jaypee. It sounds quite reasonable to me not so cheap as to be unbelievable). Soory for the long posting, but I want to try to get this visit right. Dick Campbell |

Travel by train to Agra
and then get a taxi in Agra!! Much cheaper.. the taxi driver will double up as a guide.. (of course he would not be able to work as a guide inside the monuments) They have some union thing about only licensed guides to be allowed inside |

Visting Agra by Car from Delhi
Thanks,
We have actually done the trip and hired a car with driver from SITA. You are right about the tour guide, another person was required to actually take us into the sites (also supplied by SITA). All up it as about AUD $500 to get down to Agra on Saturday and see the Agra Fort, Taj Mahal (2 visits) and Fatepur Sikri then back to Delhi on Monday. I also saw the Taj from the other side of the river. We needed flexibility and we got it so I thought that the cost was reasonable. The door to door service between hotels saved a lot of hassles.
