Beer
Where is the best place in Agra to have a beer and hang out for an hour or two -- someplace where I could meet other travellers.

Mughal Sheraton may have the coldest & best selection of beer if money is not an option. Other than that there are quite a few restaurants and some rooftop restaurants nearby (with views of the Taj) where you can imbibe. Don't know about any local 'happening spots' .... most tourists are usually operating with a bit of time constaint & just looking for a quiet place to refuel and/or short respite from the ubiquitous crowds, touts & hawkers.

As everyone in India has (probably) gone to bed, can you satisfy my curiosity while you're waiting for them to reply to this? Why are you travelling all the way to India, and only wanting to meet other travellers, rather than meeting locals?
Please don't think I am being rude, I am genuinely curious. So many people do this, I think I must be missing something obvious. Last edited by Haylo : Jul 15th, 2008 at 05:13. Reason: Typo |

Glad you asked this Haylo. Hope it doesn't scare off the poster. For some ten years on the boards (multiple) I have always wondered that. It has something to do with Forster so I should pick up a copy to reread. Just keep in mind one of my late Father in law's 3 rules for travel in India, Don't ever trust a foren to know what is going on in India..

Perhaps the OP was just looking for some Western company? While I'm more interested in meeting locals, there are times when I just want to commune with some of my own people rather than answer the endless questions about how much money do I make, where am I going, what am I doing in India, etc (call it a vacation from a vacation if you like)....and don't get me wrong, most of the time I don't mind answering such questions, but some of the time I just want to kick back and have a beer in a more comfortable atmosphere.

Having been once to India, I get tired of the constant questioning by the locals about my status. I want to chat about travel and have a quiet beer.

speaking of western company one western company called mcMorons has set up shop within a stone's throw from the taj mahal. the way another western company called walmart opened a store yards away from the Teotihuacán pyramid in mexico. soon we will have KFC in hampi and hard rock cafe in the jaisalmer fort.

yes MNcs should leave historical sites well alone. the GOI should not in turn allow them anywhere near.

Agreed wholeheartedly! but i think its more the responsibility of the GOI than the MNC's. While i propogate COrporate Social Responsibility it is still the job of the government..
Plus given things in India, we dont need MNC's to ruin our monuments.. our citizens are enough. |
