Bateshwar Fair aka Agra Cattle Fair

Has anyone been to the Bateshwar Fair? It sounds very interesting. I'm thinking of it as a day trip from Agra at the end of October. Thanks for any information.

Bateshwar is approx 65+ KM from Agra. This place is famous for Lord Siva temples on the bank of River Yamuna. It is also birth place of former PM of India ( Atal Bihari Bajpayee ).

Bateshwar fair start on 6th day of Hindu month Kartike ( some where Oct end week ). Sure it going to interesting , to see local culture closely. Moreover , Bateshwar is border of State , you will see Blended culture of 2-3 Stats.

Who give's you such ideas ?

The fair is a strict no no for tourists !!

The only good cattle fair ( if you can call it that ) is the Pushkar Camel Fair where there are tourists aplenty.

The Bateshwar cattle fair is good for buying / selling for locales. You will have no tourist amenities in that area neither any help in case you have a problem. Also the harrasment of a million villagers gawking at you.

Forget it - I'd say stay away

If you still feel like going then I'd say go with a local in a car preferably. This way you can leave in a few hours and safely !

Er, I guess some of us like such experiences and environments, and minus all the tourists. Wouldn't say that makes it a "no-no" (it's what gives us such ideas, rather )

A little caution that it could be very off-beat never goes amiss, of course.

I'll look into going with someone local, and also ask around a bit more when I get to Agra. I don't want to put us at risk. The fact that it's not a tourist attraction is appealing. But sometimes there's a reason why things are not tourist attractions

Trust me - when I say a place is not meant for tourists - IT IS NOT !!

I do not want to discourage anyone here from visiting BUT even I would think twice beore visiting such a place.

Yes, if you have access to a car / driver and a local who can guide you then by all means visit the place, explore - BUT I'd say if on your own or on public transport - forget it !

There are plenty of other things to keep ya busy in and around Agra & Delhi

Yes, I am agree with you. These areas are remote & notorious. For foreigners specially Ladies it is risky.

I had gone there a long time back and things change. Cattle trade is just one part of the large fair as it is also a major spiritual and cultural gathering. I would say this certainly is not a ‘no no’ although be ready to be center of attraction, much more than other places Still, check in Agra for some local company and even if you find it unworthy, you just lose a few hours of travelling.

Not sure how popular this among foreign tourists. But , I see on internet lots of travel agent offering tour/info. I think , what "vkochar" mention is looks right

or may be some reputed travel agencies taking group of tourists for day trip is fine.

I will suggest to check with UP tourism office, if they conduct such kind of day tour.
