Air-conditioned v. Air cooled, Hotel Sheela
I tried to reserve an air-conditioned room at Hotel Sheela for one day in August, but they are all out of air-conditioned rooms. They have air-cooled available. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two? They also have fan-cooled, but that is more self-expanatory.
Would air-cooled be unpleasant during August in Agra? |

air-cooled sounds... cool.
come to think of it, the room isnt air conditioned, and its not described as fan cooled - no maybe the room has neither aircon nor fan. all it has is the air/breeze from the window/chimney. no i would not recommend a air cooled room in agra in august. |

Agree, air cooled sounds like you get an open window!
In any case, I wouldn't want to be adventurous enough to stay there and find out, the hard way. A/C is best in August. Fans just don't make it in the big heat. |

Air conditioned is normal airconditioned
Air cooled uses a desert cooler(google). Is reasonably effective (if window mounted) in dry heat, but quite useless in high humidity . It is also noisier and much cheaper to run. If it were me, unless I really wanted that hotel, I would opt for an airconditioned room somewhere. I dont know how humid Agra is in August, but Delhi is bad. |

yes this link explains it - air cooled rooms have air coolers instead of fans or aircons. |

Thanks captain. I used the reservation page and saw air-cooled, but since I am not familiar with what air-cooling is, the description did not help me at all. Thank you for your description.

i would still suggest that you give this hotel a miss. air cooled rooms are not enviable in arga in august.

Thank you. I'll take your advice. I live in San Francisco....people like to repeat what mark twain said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." While it's not that cold here right now, it's definitely cool enough to possibly make me go into shock when I reach India.

I emailed Hotel Kamal. Hopefully I'll get an A/C room there....
I am surprised that Hotel Sheela is already out of A/C rooms....maybe they don't have many? |

Many years ago we stayed at a guest house near Connaught Circle that had an "air cooler". It actually worked very well--much better than the window unit A/C in another hotel we moved out of because it was unbearablely hot BUT THAT WAS IN THE HOT DRY season. And it was very big & very noisy but at least we were comfortable.
My husband is from Phoenix, Arizona and he said that air coolers -- called "Swamp Coolers" --worked well in Phoenix because of the very dry heat. So, since August is humid, the air cooler, aka swamp cooler, aka desert cooler WILL NOT WORK VERY WELL to keep you cool! |

The Capt. is right as rain. I have stayed at the air "cooled" rooms at the Sheela. 5 degrees difference maybe with lots of noise. Camelgirl notes the critical difference, the monsoon. I would spring for AC somewhere for summer..
