Agra Toll Tax validity
Does anyone know the validity period for the toll tax charged by the Agra Development Auhtority (which they are obviously pocketing
instead of improving tourist services)? I am planning to spend Day#1 touring the Taj and Agra Fort and Day #2 @ Fathehpur Sikri. Does this mean that I will need to pay the toll tax twice (Day #1 & Day #2)? Thanks much for anyone with good info who can take the time to reply. |

I have just returned from visiting both places today, as I understand it the tax is only valid for one day. Certainly today's date is stamped on the toll tax ticket and it was carefully checked.

Yes, it is a Rs 500 tax payable to the Agra Development Authority by non Indians only.
It covers the tourist tax for one visit each to the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Itimadud-Daula, Sikandra & Fatehpur Sikri, from sunrise to sunset on the same day. This price includes a half litre of water and shoe covers at the Taj Mahal, presumably preventative measures so tourists don't pass out through dehydration and so those who aren't used to going barefoot don't burn their feet on the hot marble. For those like me who are falling apart in my old age (hallux rigidus ), the shoe covers were a great help, walking barefoot for more than a short distance causes a problem in my toe joints which takes several weeks of not walking far to reduce. I did go barefoot for a while at the mosque complex in Fatehpur Sikri though, and while the red stone was burning hot to the feet where it was in full sun, there was some shade and I really liked the feel of the warm stone. Wouldn't recommend doing it in full summer though! |

Thanks for the clarification & update Haylo.
I still think the "tax" sucks but I guess there's no way around it. With all the (what must amount to millions by now) of dollars, not a lot seems to be happening with the improvements in the Taj compound. Cheers Zoltan |
