Traffic in Chennai never stops for pedestrians, until it is forced to do so
--- by an encroaching mass of pedestrians that eventually take over --- by a policeman --- by traffic signals if it is daylight and there is a possibility traffic police may be around

"Crossing the road strikes me as another example of "it shouldn't work, you can't explain how it works, but somehow it just does" "
Certainly explains how most of the traffic works too! ;-)

If you think you can cross at a zebra crossing safely, think again, you are likely to end up as a part of the crossing ! Even when the light at a crossing is green it is better to be alert and look at either side before crossing or better not to cross at all !

look left - look right - look left .. do a super quick calculation keeping in mind speed of closest vehicle , your speed and distance to be covered. take a call on if this is the vehicle you are giving a chance to compete against you and then go for it ..

Traffic here tends to move more when the light is Red rather than green...

I've just returned from two weeks in Hyderabad, and I had to cross Begumpet Road like this twice a day.

Best way to go -slowly but safely as long as you get there.Just told my husband and he thought that very funny. What if the cow decided to go in another direction. It's hard to believe they have cows running around (uhm walking around I mean)I really like cows they are so noble looking. What we would like to know is who do they belong to? -the ones that roam around on the streets.I'm getting a bit worried about crossing in India, is it worse than Rome or Naples does anyone know?.

You'll find most of them belong to someone; urban farm animals! Have a search around, there have been several threads about cows in India.
You'll also find that, at least in Chennai, they are no longer allowed to roam around the central main roads. You may not have to go far off the main road to find one, though: I used to live fairly central, and there was a cow-shed at the bottom of our road. Goats too, not to mention hens and I've even seen turkeys. I have never been to Italy, but I suspect that crossing an Indian road is worse than anything European. However, the main roads have traffic lights. You still have to be wary; they may be ignored by some, but they do help. |

Not in Hyderabad. Unless there's a police officer or three at the lights directing traffic, nobody pays any attention to them. I found Delhi drivers to be a bit more observant of traffic rules. The south seems to be a free for all.
