Knowing the Indian Train

When Tatkal tickets are booked on irctc.co.in, make sure you enter the train's originating station and destination station while searching.Else,you would not be able to find the Tatkal ticket availability.
Example if you are traveling from Bangalore to Trivandrum in Bangalore Kanyakumari express, for getting a tatkal ticket via irctc,search for Bangalore Kanyakumari tickets.

Some people expressed their anxiety over insects aboard moving coaches. I assure them what generally Western world interprets about India is not true.Its not that much filthy, dusty,unbearable as thought.Yes,India lives with her 12 billion people,in tropics so it cant be as squeky clean, calm,smooth as compared to West. I have taken numerous journeys on every class from unreserved, sleeper to all sorts of ACs. But never saw any insects/pests even in unreserved/sleeper coaches. Though one cannot guarantee or prevent an odd mosquito/fly/ant entering inside even in presidential suite in a tropical country.

insects dont like moving trains either

I was travelling from Trichy to Kanniyakuram on Christmas Eve last year. For some reason I couldn't get into my FC berth for an hour and a half and had to sit in the space between carriages in SL class on top of my pack.
I normally travel SL but saw an availability of FC so went for it!
The things that ran around the floor of that train!
Made me glad I normally request UB. What made it worse/passed the time was that an Indian had decided to sleep in the aisle and I could see all these things running over him!
With the amount of food spillage it's going to be a haven for nocturnal creatures.

I can feel your disgust, but as I said...no one can guarantee anything in India as its a land of opposite extremities.I'm an Indian and travel a lot, had numerous journeys but never saw insects on running train . May be that was a rare bad luck. and what was the creature? ant, rat or cockroach?

anyways what do u mean by "space between carriages" ....the vestibule joining two compartments near the toilets or aisle thru seats?

May be my country is too large/too extreme to understand/get familiar even to us.There lies much much unseen , yet to discover experience even to us.

By then I was probably 8000km into my train journeys and had never given it a second thought.
I was sat in the carriage connection beside the lavatories looking up through the aisle of the 6x2 SL carriage.
I saw cockroaches, mice, a rat, geckos and lots of ants. Came to a point that I took my sandals off and put on socks!
Now! I've spent a lot of time on trains too. Just that that night my perspective was one foot above the floor and I saw things differently.
Didn't stop me doing another 2000km to complete the journey - I just always made sure I was off the ground as the sun went down!
I take your point about the tropics. This is an open forum and I'm sharing my experience, unfortunately this is a negative one - usually they're all positive.
Won't stop me being back in November.

Gr88.Thats the Spirit Buck. That place is a real horror,I would have bought a tatkal tkt or availed some other means to travel in situation like you were in.I appreciate your attitude.In India you will always find good and bad both extremities live together under same roof.

No country is perfect, India isnt either.India's charm lies not in its urban chaos, rural poverty,corrupted administration,but in its vastness,nature,religion, heritage, culture,unity in diversity.We overcame many horrible economic, social, cultural, territorial, commercial issues that was created by the British by raping India for 200 yrs only in 60 independent years. India has made giant leaps in every walk of modern civilization from education,economy,healthcare, commerce, defence,decisive geo-politics,science and technology, everythingIndia will gradually wipe out all civic disorders, imperfections in coming years which generally foreigners suffer/fear of.

In the end I voted AC3 - a close thing with sleeper class, but the longer trips really are much easier going.. Sleeper/2nd for 6 hours or less trips and ureserved for emergencies only!

Hello everyone,
I apologize in advance if I missed the answer to my question on one of the numerous pages of this interesting discussion... anyway, I'll be traveling overnight on AC3 between Delhi, Lucknow and Haridwar in two weeks from now. I know it's going to be pretty chilly if not freezing, but are there blankets? I would assume they will be provided, but heard otherwise from someone.
Also, I guess no mosquito will survive in those night temperatures?..
Any tips for overnight travel in particular?

Bedrolls are provided in 3AC. But I traveled in 3AC in Mid January through UP in night. I didnt even used the blanket.It was comfortably warm inside the coach.I got down in one station to taste how cold it was around 5AM without any warm clothes. Really it was a bone freezer.
