Probably great before Backwater trip, but not after

Positives: few rooms only, therefore few people
Negatives: no wifi not much attention to complaints by staff;

I was there in September 2011, following the fabulous recommendations here. Reservation worked well by phone, they speak good English. I reserved an upstairs, the costlier version of what they offer. The room, though basic, was nice; all out of wood, a large bed with moskito-net supplied. The balcony is shared with the second upstairs room, which is a disadvantage; little privacy, and necessary to lock your balcony door each time you go out. A separation would have been easy to fix; there is space for one. There were smokers next door, some unpleasant moments, but bearable. Now what everyone praises here in their reviews, was seen more as a nuisance by us, that is all these steamer-houseboats roaring by and leaving all these fumes of diesel-smoke behind. It appeared to me at times like I was at a landing strip at a very busy airport. But I did notice that from downstairs all this looked differently, less annoying, since also the fumes were less noticable down there. Since we came from a backwater trip Kottayam-Alleppey, the magic of the backwaters had deminished to seeing the reality of a sewage-mixed stream where some not so rich people do their washing and all. After such a long Backwater-experience the stay at Malayalam resort was not that great.

A major complaint we had was that the fuse always blew in the bathroom, so no light there, and no water pumped up. Very annoying. Complaints did not fructify. Some guy just went to turn the main switch back on, promised calling an electrician each time, but nothing ever happened. They simply did not care. After a few days we moved to a much better place nearby, the Regal Mansion. Very pleasant there, quiet, good food and Wifi!

At Malyalam Resort I would recommend to take an unattached hut, they have only one; there is another one but if i remember correctly it was connected to something else. At any ratge I mean the one right at the entrance. That seemed like a good option, although somewhat basic too. But a romantic half-outdoor shower. The more expensive rooms upstair are not really worth it, although not that expensive (Rs 800), except if the houseboats roaring by is what you enjoy seeing. The downstairs rooms are very narrow and small, not recommended. But that hut looked like something else, and was only Rs 600.

I do not want to ruin anyone's business by giving a bad review; yet it is not going to make much difference for them, because they are almost always full. But I prefer to be honest, than to make up stories. The inattention to my frequent complaints about the bathroom and pump fuse is really a scandal, and I should downgrade the overall rating by much more. But I think their inattention reflects that they are too spoiled by fabulous reviews which result in their small place always being full. But over time they might learn that it does not pay. The internet never forgets, as long as google exists.
