Best location in India to chill and contemplate nature

We stayed with Thomas, Rose and Jos for a week over Christmas 2008 and practically did not move from the homestay. The location is unbeatable, right on the water, close to town yet far away enough to not hear it. We would just sit there for hours, talking, eating, sipping chai, watching the houseboats go by with people all wishing they were staying where we were! You won't need to take a trip on a houseboat since you have the backwaters experience right there. The wildlife, the local life, all rolling out at your feet. The rooms were clean though simple, mosquito nets -we didn't need to use and slept with our windows open-, good breakfast and dinner, and a greatly helpful staff. Jos has a very good command of English language and will do whatever he can to make your stay pleasant. For example he arranged a canoe rental so we could go out on our own whenever we wanted to. I woudl go back any time and hope to go there for even more than a week.
