Three of us stayed there two nights...

Overall:

Three of us stayed there two nights in Feb 2007. I had booked it in advance, then read Floodlights's review the day before we were to leave the US and got seriously worried--my friends were going to India for the first time and what was I getting them into? But we LOVED the place and could have spent more time there easily. Rooms are extremely basic, but clean and well maintained. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The place was built in the 1890s and has great atmosphere and wonderful Art Nouveau tiles on the walls. We had laundry done and it was inexpensive and returned punctually. The area is certainly not upscale, but the three of us never felt unsafe wandering about, and it is easy to get walk to the ferries that cross the river to the center of the city. And if you're going to arrive or leave by train through Howrah, it is certainly the closest! We also arranged transport to and from the airport with them and it was perfect. I strongly recommend this place to budget travellers!
