Cherrapungee Holiday Resort Village The brainchild of Denis Rayan and his charming wife Carmen this is a homestay with a difference! Its purpose is to tell the world about the attractions of the Living Root Bridges of Cherrapungee (Sohra in local Khasi parlance) and to encourage tourism during the Monsoons when the nature is abundant and the waterfalls are at their best. Also it is to ensure help for the local economy, employing village people, showcasing local musicians at impromptu concerts, using local guides for trekking. Six rooms only. It needs to be booked way in advance unless you happen to fall lucky (as we did) and someone postpones their reservation. Good showers but mostly cold water. Tin roof - you can hear the rain pelting down - it's a lullaby! Good food in hotel restaurant. Try the papaya parathas for breakfast. Excellent lassi. Also local Khasi specialities (mainly pork based dishes). Needs to be ordered an hour or two in advance. But meal-times are totally flexible. (Trekking takes importance.) You are always welcomed into the hotel with a lime soda offered even before you set foot inside. Lawns surround the property where you can relax with a book or take pictures of the view. At night, bonfire parties. Maps are drawn for trekking routes, adapted to suit the capabilities of the guest. Concerts are arranged periodically.
